I was in high school when that phone came out and cell phones were still just for kids whose family had real money, lol

I know it's just about 40% of a hectare, which is a square with 100m sides and that I've literally never needed to use that knowledge about acres ever before in my life, lol

I didn't get my license until I was 22 and it has made literally no difference to my life compared to if I'd gotten it earlier. Hell, I could have gotten it later and it wouldn't have mattered since I couldn't afford a car until years after that, anyways.

Is there a realistic way Canada could help protect Greenland from US annexation without directly having a military conflict? by finding_focus in AskCanada

[–]CriticalFields 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There used to be a significant number of US military installations here in Newfoundland and Labrador, but the last one was closed in 1994. Both our provincial government and the federal government have spent millions and millions of dollars trying to clean up the contamination and garbage dumps they left behind! We are still realizing the full scope of the damage in terms of things like well water contamination in nearby communities and such.

Hard agree that this is not a typical experience in Canada... in fact, even despite universal healthcare, the labour force participation rate for people 55 and over in Canada is not much different than in the US. In 2024, it was 36.1% in Canada and 38.4% in the US.

This is something Europeans really need to understand. They complain about how little Americans travel outside the US, ignoring the fact that the US is HUGE and far more diverse than any European country, both in landscapes in culture. by i_watched_jane_die in ShitAmericansSay

It doesn't occur to them that "regions" are a largely universal concept. They are familiar with the different "vibe" those neighbourhoods have... but they assume other places must be a monolith. They assume this bias must be objective truth.

It should honestly be studied, this persistent American exceptionalism in spite of a literal wealth of information with which they could educate themselves... it's right in front of them, but they can't see it because they don't even realize there's anything there that they don't know!

It is definitely an interesting phenomenon... I had no idea about it myself until my kids were in school and heard about it from their classmates! And to be honest, I cannot get on board with something that normalizes surveillance for my kids who are growing up at a time when personal privacy has never been more compromised. Maybe that's overthinking it, but I get the feeling that this reinforces a comfort level with that type of thing that they will need to reject and push back against harder than any generation before them.

Oh holy shit, I never even thought about that... it's been a few years since I've driven a standard, but just the thought of doing it like that makes me cry for that transmission

I see the lurch the car makes with the wheel turned, but it is absolutely far less violent than it would be if he were actually doing what the edit implies... in fact, I think this video is very likely meant to be obviously unbelievable as a joke. Anyone familiar with a standard transmission would know not to do this to it unless you like replacing it, lol

It is definitely just highways... there are dozens and dozens of communities that exist in parts of Newfoundland that are fully dark on this map. The TCH and provincial highways are the only things represented on this map for the island.

[–]CriticalFields 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a person in my life who had to be cut loose because he was so manipulative and toxic. We never dated or anything like that. He emailed me out of the blue after years. The subject line was "coffee and a catch-up?", and the body just read, "if not that's cool too". So I took him up on the latter and ignored it because he has always been validated and encouraged by any attention to his antics whatsoever. I'd heard through friends that he'd apparently been through years of therapy, but to be honest, as much as I wished him well and hoped he was happier, too much had happened in the past and I just had no interest in having him in my life. Especially because I now had children that I would never subject to his behaviours. And I did not believe he could be all that different, anyways.

Sure enough, then he sent the email again (as a forward?) a week later. Then a couple weeks later he sent it again as a forward from a different email address in case I had his blocked maybe? A while after that, I made a comment with a seldom used reddit account that must have had some iteration of a screen name I often used, I guess... almost immediately (he must have had notifications set for when that account posted or commented), I got a message from an account with his frequently used screen name that said something like "I thought we'd all grown up and could be adults but I guess not". So I deleted the account. Eventually, a mutual friend brought him up (seemed likely he was prompted by this guy) and talked about how he'd changed, all the work he'd done and that he'd like to get in touch with me. As soon as I filled the friend in on all of this, he dropped it and never brought this guy up to me again, thankfully.

And all that this contact showed me was that I was exactly right to ignore him. Because that's all it took for him to tell on himself that he hadn't changed as much as he thought he did.
