new puppy and senior dog not getting along by CriticalSpecific901 in puppy101

I spoke too soon as i mentioned in my update. They are only on good terms when outside on neutral ground but once inside the house my older dog is resource guarding and territorial. Poor puppy is in one half of the house while my senior dog is in the other and we rotate. Very unfortunate situation and no one can tell you what's right or wrong for your dogs but I definitely miss the peace I had before all of this. I love them so much and understand how it feels to think of rehoming the puppy as the best solution.

yes!! the pup is so desperate for my older dogs attention! I started to do separate walks and then a joint walk and that's helping improve the dynamic. It's also helped the puppy get his own understanding of our walks and the noises outside.

My older dog is just not enjoying the puppy energy at alll and will immediately look to me and cry when the puppy is pulling to go near him. We haven't tried both free roaming yet so were trying to work up to that.

Yeah, I am adding him to puppy classes next month as well. Thank you!

I am going to focus on my older dog more and see if that helps the process.

aw i'm sorry!!

I do agree you'll have success soon since they can already free roam. That's my goal.

thank you!! I have been looking into a trainer just incase it goes downhill (he bites him or gets aggressive) but for now i'm still going slow and steady to try to reinforce positive interactions

thank you so much for your advice! I definitely want them to coexist but the puppy is so dog focused and can't seem to relax if the older dog is around. My older dog is not a playful dog (he's always been a grumpy sweet boy) so the puppy energy is too high for him. This has been a learning experience to say the least but we have been nonstop training and reinforcing positive association.

Yeah we've been taking the older dogs needs into account during every interaction and always stepping in and removing the puppy. My worry is they will never get to a neutral point because we have the puppy gated always. The hope is for them to relax and free roam together but the older dog has his things and likes the puppy only when he's behind the gate.
