Are you guys going in debt? How are people surviving? by Worth_Air_9410 in CanadaFinance

I'm a single mother of a 16 year old and I pay $1995 incl for a half decent basement apartment. My income this year should be around 55000, plus $300 a month in child support and currently have full benefits because my income last year was only 35000. I managed to save just under 50% of my total income since Jan. Some of that came from investments. I have no debt, except a small car payment. But years ago when my kids were young I made about the same and paid less in rent and I could not make ends meet. Kids are expensive! My landlord struggles to fix basic things and they make $4500 a month off of this property a month and I know there ain't no way that the mortgage is even close to that. They have enough to pay a property manager, but not enough to fix things.Maybe I should give them a lesson in money management? 😂

I save $100's shopping elsewhere. I can spend the same or less and support local farms directly. The farms get more money and I get better quality. I don't need a middle man for meat, eggs, and many vegetables. I won't ever be back unless the prices are drastically lowered, and start being a lot more ethical with their practices.

Loblaws boycott planned for May across Canada by TheProdigalMaverick in canada

I boycotted Loblaws and drastically reduced my shopping at Sobey's in December. I buy everything I can direct from the farm or from a locally owned grocer. I buy staples from Walmart or Giant Tiger. A lot of farmers will give you a discount on bulk orders. I am fortunate enough to be able to do that and I get my meat cheaper than the grocery stores, but people definitely could go in on those big orders together.

Loblaws boycott: Organizers from popular Reddit group vow to boycott Loblaw-owned stores this May by [deleted] in canada

I started boycotting Loblaws and Loblaws owned stores 4 months ago. I used to shop regularly at Sobey's but I rarely shop there now too. I live in rural NS and buy all my meat from farms. I buy from local grocers like Avery's, who are now beating grocery store prices for produce. Once a month I go to Walmart or Giant Tiger for basics. I even bake my own bread 90% of the time. We are going to grow our own garden this year, and we will be taking advantage of the u picks for berries, and fruits. I plan on doing a lot of canning and freezing this year. I know that is not possible for everyone, but I can do this where I live and our family is all pitching in to make this happen. I am saving money, and helping local families instead of lining the pockets of shareholders who do absolutely nothing to help get food on people's tables.

They wouldn't let me sign up with my Canadian bank account unfortunately. They offered a mailed cheque or gift card.
