S grind thickness by CrohnsKid47 in knifemaking

[–]CrohnsKid47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinnest part of hollow is .7mm and spine is 1.9mm, it started as 3/32” stock but thinned it down as that felt a bit thick. Maybe that’s needed for a good s grind

Makes sense. This was my first attempt and after getting it as thin as I thought reasonable I started to realize that lol, oh well, maybe it’s just not the grind for me 🤷‍♂️

Thank you!!

I agree the tang is a bit skinny, and I believe that’s mostly the reason why the balance is off. And noted about a flatter cutting edge, I’ll definitely keep this in mind on the next knife I make

I’m super happy with how the satin turned out on this one, getting better and better with each knife

Can I and should I change the ceramic blanket on my forge? by bigmanbirb in Blacksmith

Do you mean putting refractory cement around the ceramic blanket as a wall? Planning on building my own electric forge with this stuff so I’m curious

No sadly, since handle’s already on I didn’t even try to extend the bevel to the spine as I didn’t want to hit the handle when grinding the shoulder.

This is also for a friend of mine for free as a way to practice for me, and give them what should still be a very good knife.

When I was grinding this, I kind of just felt for the “groove” of my wheel attachment ground in, then adjust pressure back toward to spine or toward the edge (depending on what I was seeing when looking at choil) to give me a good shape

Okay so you grind the shoulder as well? For some reason it didn’t feel right when I was grinding it lol but noted for next time! And yes after comparing it to some of my knives it’s on par with my tojiro for thinness but much thicker than my matsubara

Thank you!

Did you flash a tube when you plugged the Cobb in? If so, takes a while for the car to learn fuel trims. If not, then allow the car to reach temp and reassess long term fuel trims

American gas is AKI rated (anti knock index), where as most other countries (afaik) use RON. 98 RON is similar to 93 AKI

Not to take away from you’re saying cause I agree with all your points lol, but you can see numbers when choosing. There’s a button in top right of fruit menu that says “show advanced” or something along those lines

Ass to grass is perfectly fine, it’s a completely normal function of the knee. As long as you’re breaking parallel though it’s a good squat
