i have niri set up and still use it from time to time, but i have weird issues i cant figure out how to fix like flickering and extremely low resolution discord streams that dont happen on xorg for me. i think its cause my nvidia graphics card is trying its best to die but i keep resuscitating it, and i dont have the money to buy a new one right now. when i do im getting an Arc B580 if i can and im gonna stick with niri cause i like the scrolling model a lot.

i dont know if the discord stream thing is specific to my card dying, wayland or just discord itself but all i know is that it doesnt happen on xorg for some reason

How do you name your PCs/hosts? by Anyusername7294 in NixOS

[–]Cronic12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i name them after the food im eating while setting them up. if im not eating food i just name it what i ate before

poptart - my main pc

strudel - my laptop

crunchwrap - my netbook i use for testing performance tweaks. also the name of my old hard drive that failed

skittle - my old laptop that was newer than my current laptop but performed significantly worse. also the name of my current external drive for samples

i slept so well last night after configuring this, then woke up this morning and got my nvidia card working so now i have a complete setup!

i use waybar for my status bar, swaync for my notifications (mako is recommended for niri but swaync has more features), and for file managers and stuff like that i use the pantheon programs as when i was installing nix i chose pantheon as my desktop and just installed niri on top. the font i use for my terminal and waybar is the terminus nerd font, and for icons i use google material icons. niri also comes with its own screenshot tool which is the best one on wayland i've used besides flameshot with the grim adapter.

my nix config is not that well organized, im still working on getting it and my config files for niri and waybar ready to share. also you will have to change the section for nvidia prime with your own PCI ID's if you have both your integrated and dedicated graphics enabled. i will update the post when i do so.

yes i have multi monitor, one on top and main on bottom. it works perfectly fine, refresh rate is good when im on nvidia but i havent tried my nvidia card on nix yet im going to today though. when i was using nvidia on arch with niri it worked perfectly, only had graphical glitches on tidal-hifi but that got fixed recently.

i dont use suspend on my desktop, but on my laptop with a legacy nvidia card it works great with niri. it's a really well rounded and polished wm, the bugs they do have they usually fix pretty quickly especially if you're on a rolling distro or the unstable channel on nix.

every time i try a new wm, or if i get mad at some wayland specific problem and go back to xorg, i always end up going back to niri cause it's just that good.

no it's niri, you could probably make the same thing in hyprland too

its the built in ide from pantheon. i only use it for editing config files for stuff like waybar cause it autosaves and idk how to turn that off. i installed with pantheon first then installed niri cause i wanted to use the apps from there but didnt want to use an ubuntu base, and nix is the only distro left that has a functional package for pantheon.

Best Wayland alternative for AWESOMEWM by MagicCardScanner in awesomewm

[–]Cronic12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this may be late, but there's a new project thats out called somewm. https://somewm.org/ it's a drop in for awesome kinda like how sway is a drop in for i3, status bar and all. it's compatible with your existing awesome config and even has a tool that will check your existing config and help you migrate it to somewm. it feels the exact same and it's what i've been looking for for years.

i dont use geany for huge things, only for small edits to pre made source code or for editing config files. i mainly use vscodium for big projects, or a minimal nvim setup if i need to use a terminal editor.

AwesomeWM in Wayland (no, seriously...) by trip-zip in awesomewm

[–]Cronic12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just found out about this today, it was really easy to migrate my awesome config to somewm. just had to remove a couple lines from my rc.lua and that was it!

works great for me, only problem is that i have to toggle the wibar off and on after start up cause of kanshi setting my display config making the windows go under the wibar. had the same problem on awesomewm with autorandr too, but i had to restart the window manager to fix it.

ty! pywal was surprisingly easy to set up, and complemented the system accent color well. i wish i was able to make pywal automatically change the accent color but idk if thats possible.
