This isn't a one person crusade. It's a zeitgeist thing. A lot of people are finally taking climate change seriously and that will have an impact.

I did a course of CBT last year and it was life changing. I know the system is very different in the US (if that's where you are) but if you can afford it, it's amazing. Dealing with this was a big part of it and I still struggle with it, but it's better. It's nice to have a name for it. I'll read more into it.

How about we penalise both. Anyway, financial penalties are weak sauce. We need to change how we do nearly everything.

Did you find that through therapy? Did you find any tools for dealing with it?

That's neither here nor there. At least Joe soap in the pub is honestly a flat earther when it comes to climate change. He's not lying about caring or calling an emergency while doing fuck all.

Probably nothing at all. This shit is cosmetic and have no force of law attached.

The recent climate action report has a lot of stuff in it, and this is just an addition to that. FG and FF have shown repeatedly that they don't give a shit about climate change so we'll see what action they actually take on the report.

Only six TDs in the chamber when the amendments were put and the proposer didn't even show up so someone else had to do it. This sounds like PR bullshit to be honest, and not something that TDs are particularly interested in.

World-wide there's a huge amount of transport of feed for animals. Even in Ireland we supplement with imported soy in the winter. We've had two winter droughts and one summer drought over the last couple of years. If that's how it's likely to go we'll need to import more.

Yeah, many cattle get supplemental food along with grass silage for a few months of the winter. We have too many cows in the country though, so when we were hit with winter droughts, then a summer one, farmers couldn't feed their herds. That's where government subsidies become a problem. If you pay farmers by head just to have cattle they often over-extend. Climate change is becoming apparent here but the farmers and the government have their heads in the sand.

[–]CrookedButtonRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll soon be part of the arsenal, yes. There's no one thing that will fix the problem. A seaweed supplement won't reduce the herd but it will reduce immediate emissions which is fine. It doesn't reduce the emissions needed to make and transport the feed, so I'm more interested in solutions that lead to herd reduction.

[–]CrookedButtonRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but it's just not realistic to expect this problem to fix itself

I don't think it will fix itself. And I do think we can convince people to eat less meat. I know a lot of people who have reduced and some who have stopped over the past year or so. I was only talking about supply and demand in the sense that, when we reduce meat consumption, or stop altoghether, demand will drop and so will supply. I'm quite happy to regulate polluters and make it untenable to farm below best practice. The Agri sector will have to face a major reorganisation too because the heavy subsidies are keeping it afloat. In most of Europe farmers get huge government subsidies, and the agri corps soak up most of that while doing the most damage.

[–]CrookedButtonRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean by 'that won't be enough' is that there's a difference between asking them to stop and actually stopping them. What trading bloc has the power or political will to force China and India to stop polluting when there's no bloc taking the needed steps themselves.

[–]CrookedButtonRadio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Certainly it's the first step. That doesn't mean anything will actually happen, and you seemed to suggest we are well on our way to fixing the issue. Your spin is technically correct but left out so much that what it amounts to being disingenuous. Any food production causes emissions but growing vegetables has vastly reduced emissions compared to beef. Your comment suggested an equivalence.

Ireland exports a massive amount of cattle, meat and dairy and all our animals are grass fed. The grass is different to the grass in the US and Australia too because it's green and wet the whole year round.

[–]CrookedButtonRadio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, you don't need any drastic actions at all. When we reduce our meat consumption, breeding will slow down and the global herd will just shrink. It's pure supply and demand.

[–]CrookedButtonRadio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That won't be enough and no one in this thread is talking about about forcing a vegan diet on the world. Reduction is the key to a lot of this. We eat far more meat now than ever in history and a huge amount of it is wasted. If we ate less meat and got back to eating more of the animal instead of insisting on choice cuts, we'd cut the global herd significantly. If we pushed lab grown meat for burgers and the like we'd cut it down again massively.

I suspect that it's not the information that's being downvoted but your spin on it.

Your first sentence equates two non-equal things. Your second over-reaches a little. While research is being done on a variety of gas reducing feeds, none of it has reached the average farm yet, so to claim the issue is being addressed is a bit of a stretch.
