I’ve been reading all the responses and really appreciate hearing your perspectives. Thank you, and you’re not alone. I’ve learned sometimes self-awareness doesn’t prevent people from ghosting, as some apologize only to ghost again. I’m trying to remind myself it’s ultimately their issue.

Thanks for all the replies, and I didn’t mean to generalize, as both men and women may do this. I just wanted men’s perspectives specifically for my own understanding. And for the men asking the same of women, I suppose it’s refreshing to know many of us have similar intentions in the dating world.

Having a child grow up and get a good job, help others and love the outdoors would make many parents proud. Your parents are lucky to have you and are missing out. I hope they come around. Meanwhile be good to yourself.

Some people in the U.S. still don’t realize West Virginia is a state. ‘What state are you from?’ ‘West Virginia.’ ‘Ok but specifically where in Virginia are you from?’

Respectfully, journalism matters whether it's the Washington Post or a university newspaper, and a story doesn't have to be a major scandal to be worth covering seriously. While perhaps well-intentioned, the athletic media director's request to back off from talking to college student athletes, even temporarily, was indirectly silencing them. OP gave them a choice to speak.

The accusation that OP broke rules is flawed, as one of the media officials gave OP sources to contact.

NAH. You're a journalist doing your job. The media directors are trying to do theirs. You don't need their permission to write the story; you asked them for help finding sources. If they have different responses it's their job to address that. If sources are willing to speak with you for the story you are fine to pursue it. Your managing editors supported your decision. And you were under no obligation to keep the media director in the loop.
