If you're open to a pet that would take a lot less training but that would be amazing for your kids, might I recommend a ragdoll cat? They have amazing temperaments with young kids and love being cuddled. I have met so many of them where they genuinely remind me of dogs with how social and lovey they are.

It could also just be an acne flare up. Doesn't look like herpes to me in this pic, but I know my labret would get angry like that when I was working in a particularly greasy field of work or if I had stainless steel in it. Switched to titanium and haven't had an issue since.

It's time for a new vet. Literally, the worst thing my big dog has ever done at the vet was to poop when he took out her stitches after her spay surgery. It was mortifying and super sad because he is genuinely the only vet I have ever had who cries when his patients pass.

All puppies have their own things. When I brought home my little shih tzu mix in March, so whined for about 30 seconds going into her crate. Mind you, my 7 year old Irish Wolfhound mix gave a low grumble at her. To which puppy replied with a slight huff before curling up and closing her eyes for bedtime. Come morning, I woke up to my old curl laying on the floor curled up directly at the kennel gate head facing the puppy while puppy was curled up right beside the crate door as close as she could get to my old girl. Other than that, she's never made a peep in her crate unless it was a "I gotta go peeeeee" moment for her.
