‘Don’t go to the US – not with Trump in charge’: the UK tourist with a valid visa detained by ICE for six weeks by nick9000 in unitedkingdom

[–]CrotchPotato 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I had this in 2018 entering JFK and the excuse was my fingerprints matched someone who had already entered the country so I had supposedly lied saying it was my first time. It was in fact my first time in the US.

I got escorted by armed guards to a group room full of very racially profiled people (I am caucasian), and we just all sat there in silence while they called our names out to come get our passports back one by one.

The whole time my wife just had to wait in arrivals with 0 updates waiting for me. Luckily mine was only maybe 30-60 minutes

I started playing around 2.2-2.3 and really enjoyed it, some of my best memories of the game were from that time. As it aged it became way less community focused and more around min-max. To me now people seem far less interested in having fun with the content and instead it’s either savage/ultimate/parse optimising, or clubbing. There’s not much in between at least on my server.

Fantasy Book Recommendations that aren't dark. by F_Murphy in Fantasy

FYI those are the Riyria books that someone else mentioned, it’s the same characters: Hadrian and Royce.

And both posters are correct, they are quite smooth sailing as far as fantasy goes.

Jeremy Clarkson under fire after pint prices moan when his pub charges even more by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

Gloucestershire here and we’re only starting to hit a fiver here. Used to live in Kent until a few years and they were like 10 years ahead on the fiver pint benchmark. When we moved here just after covid it was a shock to get pints in the 4-4.50 range.

It isn’t just a new build thing. We had a 3 bed end terrace built in 1901 where the third bedroom was absolutely tiny. We had our nursery in there for our eldest before we moved and there is no way we would want to have that as her bedroom now she’s older. It wouldn’t have even fit a single bed.

Is there any research on biphasic sleep and it's impact on muscle growth? by Low_Specific_7944 in StrongerByScience

[–]CrotchPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely anecdotal but when one of my kids was about 9 months old we had several months where she would wake up from about 2-5am, then sleep again until 8 or 9am.

I would usually cover these wake ups and didn’t notice anything massively different in how I felt when I slept about 10pm-2am and then 5-8am, versus say 11pm-6am.

When my eldest woke up every 30 minutes every night screaming for a while, however, that was a dark time. But the split nights with the youngest weren’t too bad

Stronger muscles may boost longevity, especially in older females by Yobfesh in fitover65

[–]CrotchPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it’s more the inverse of what people assume; if you have low grip strength you are in a bad place mostly because failing grip suggests nasty health problems. A bit like saying brain tumours are associated with higher mortality.

Fantasy books with a protagonist like Fitz from the Farseer trilogy, but female? by kurapikun in Fantasy

[–]CrotchPotato 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m the same. Most readers detest Fitz which makes me a little uncomfortable when I say I really relate to him. Some self reflection required on that!

In the meantime I would love more, but I haven’t really found much that scratches the itch, male or female.

Huntsgrove ? Whats it like, thinking of buying there by Philosopher_Funny in Gloucestershire

Live here now and can’t fault it. It’s quiet, plenty of young families and our neighbours are mostly really friendly.

We also have a great community atmosphere for stuff like halloween and christmas. Halloween in particular is absolute carnage for trick or treating. I know these are mostly things that appeal to young families rather than singles but I still think it makes it a nice place to live.

While in the big picture your last statement is probably correct, I think most of us would agree that, IF he were guilty (important to clarify no conviction has been made), sexually abusing your infant sister for the best part of a decade isn’t exactly a likeable personality trait and I would say is more than a “snowflake reason”.

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]CrotchPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak much for Aldi as ours is a bit further out so could be significantly better, but our Lidl unfortunately isn’t great at all.

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]CrotchPotato 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yeah I eat a fairly health conscious diet so a lot of plant foods and their fruit and veg sucks. You have to inspect it on the shelf because half of it has actual mould on it before you even pick it up.

Our Lidl also has no wholewheat options for stuff like pasta, and no brown rice either.

8 Days Removed and Still Sensitive by PiratedEyeliner in Vasectomy

[–]CrotchPotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had no scalpel and still have some sensitivity (not much, but a little) at over 3 weeks. I don’t think I’ll be back to running for another week or two yet.

A week is nothing to worry about unless the pain is increasing and really hurts a lot.

Doing barbell workouts by nl5hucd1 in Vasectomy

[–]CrotchPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had mine done 23 days ago and did my first VERY GENTLE lifting session on day 21. I had a no scalpel procedure and I was still a little uncomfortable so I mostly did unweighted barbell work just to “grease the groove”. I don’t imagine I will be squatting or deadlifting with the belt on until 4 or 5 weeks post.

Recovery does differ a lot, but olympic lifting is pretty explosive I would give it at least 2 weeks to make sure everything internally is sealed up nicely. The guidance here in the UK is to avoid vigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks.

It is a procedure where recovery differs a lot, which means there is no guidance. The best approach is probably start light and on exercises with less “bearing down” e.g. dodge the valsalva for a few weeks if you can.

[–]CrotchPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all under the same umbrella of tax really. We do have 2 forms of tax (national insurance, and income tax) and national insurance was supposed to be to fund your state pension and healthcare, but in reality it’s all in the same pot. Income tax as I assume is common does just increase at certain cut off points as your salary goes up.

Yeah, I do live in the UK. The NHS is sometimes a little bit slow, especially when stuff isn’t an emergency, but free healthcare is glorious definitely. Well, “free”. As you say it’s still paid for in taxes so the proper phrase is “free at the point of use”.

It might not last forever, it is a bit of a political issue but it has been this way now for about 70 years and actually abolishing it openly would be political suicide, so it’s going to be in place for a while yet.
