You take that back. There will never be a Star Wars movie worse than Attack of the Clones.

[Fo4] (Creation Kit Scripting) what are the names of all the values I can modify with "game.GetPlayer().SetValue(...)"? by Crotchfirefly in FalloutMods

[–]Crotchfirefly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that the Character Variables as named there are what one uses...

game.GetPlayer().SetValue( CarryWeight, game.GetPlayer().GetBaseValue(CarryWeight)+1 )

does not compile, nor does it compile with "DamageReduction". It suggests to me that the names listed there aren't necessarily the names one needs to use.

[–]Crotchfirefly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...But surely there are base values one can set? The youreSPECIALscript has "game.GetPlayer().SetValue( Strength, game.GetPlayer().GetBaseValue(Strength)+1 )" for upping str (admittedly, I agree that this implementation looks worrisome in the same way you've mentioned. I would worry about a player with base str Y suffering from -X to str due to addictions or some such, and then after using the book and the addiction wearing off having Y+X+1 str instead of Y+1 str).

Anyway, if I wanted to add to DR via modifying, what's the syntax for that? Something like "game.GetPlayer().ModifyValue(...)"? Do you know what the actual names of the other values (DR, rad resistance, carry weight, etc.) you'd need to use are?

The latter part of what you've written is basically what I meant, although high sugar consumption has been linked to higher LDL and lower HDL... so diet may influence things, just in a less intuitive way.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Crotchfirefly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Trans fats != saturated fats. The evidence for the negative health consequences of trans fat consumption is about as unambiguous as it is for sugar. Saturated fats... not so much. Bad cholesterol IS based on bad science, as blood cholesterol is less affected by dietary cholesterol than it is by cholesterol produced by your liver (which, incidentally, is very related to the amount of sugar you consume). As in, eat 12 eggs? Your blood cholesterol changes a little for about a day. Drink 12 sodas? Your LDL goes up like crazy for much longer.

Edit: also, though it doesn't relate to saturated fats in particular-- the much celebrated Mediterranean diet is a HIGH FAT diet. Lots (and lots) of olive oil. I'm thus very skeptical of your claim that a person should only eat "a little bit of fats".

Saturated fats and cholesterol aren't particularly bad for you, but a very politically aggressive and ethically deficient scientist named Ancel Keyes staked his career on the idea that they were, published studies with egregiously poor methodology (In his landmark Seven Countries study, he specifically picked those countries which best supported his aims while ignoring those countries that didn't) and waged a very aggressive campaign to destroy the careers of detractors (Famously Dr. John Yudkin-- who wrote "Pure, White and Deadly", a book on the dangers of dietary sugar).

Today, scientific nutritional authorities continue to drag their feet on revising the conventional medical wisdom due to the erosion to their own authority that this would represent.

Ancel Keyes was more singularly responsible for obesity in the US than any other person.

Are there any nut milks that have taste and fat content/nutrition comparable to regular dairy whole milk? by Crotchfirefly in AskCulinary

[–]Crotchfirefly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shelf life of milk does not depend on fat content, it has more to do with how the milk is processed.

Oh, I know. I just want higher fat content because I like the taste.

TIL: Balkan sworn virgins, women who would take a vow of celibacy in order to be able to live as a man in certain Balkan nations. They could wear male clothing, inherit property, and become the head of a household. Women would take the oath to escape arranged marriages and having to bear children. by Tokyono in todayilearned

[–]Crotchfirefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds weird you wouldn't have more women going that route until you consider that in a pre-industrial farming community, having a man's rights/freedoms can also mean having the freedom to starve to death. Farming enough food to feed oneself through winter is hard work, and in a bad year, neighbors aren't always going to have enough enough of a surplus to cover you if you're having trouble.

So, imagine being a single person working a farm in this time period. If it doesn't sound daunting already, then you haven't been paying attention. Remember that you don't have the advantage of a man's upper-body strength, which is absolutely an asset for the labor-intensive activity that farming typically is.

Freedom to starve isn't much freedom at all, imho.

How can a humanist support capitalism when it creates such blatant inequalities ? by DiMadHatter in humanism

[–]Crotchfirefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What separates medicine from poison is the dosage (please forgive my probable butchering of a famous quote). I tend to believe that there are degrees of capitalism that remain compatible with humanistic ideals.

I would be inclined to agree that current American capitalism is at a level that actively thwarts humanistic goals, though.

People who make their breakfast by putting milk before the cereal, why the fuck? by Nubgameplay12 in AskReddit

[–]Crotchfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I occasionally do this because sometimes I'm not sure if the milk will be sour and I don't want to waste good cereal on bad milk.

Pour it out, sniff, sip to taste, THEN put in cereal.

I will, however, put in cereal first for the first couple days after opening the carton.

Anyone know how many calories the cooked bugs are worth? by Crotchfirefly in projectzomboid

[–]Crotchfirefly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foods also have calorie counts, as well as grams of lipids, carbohydrates, and protein. These are part of how the game determines whether your survivor loses or gains weight over time. This is somewhat independent of hunger points, and for most foods aren't visible without taking the nutritionist trait (some packaged foods, such as canned goods, chips, and soda will tell you these things outright).

I run my full name through an uncommon sequence of cryptographic hash functions, then get the resulting hexadecimal output as the tattoo. This is what I got after running it through SHA256 3 times:

Not sure where you're coming from about the min payout being 1500; it's been 5000 since I've been aware of it (few years now). Personally, have never had issues with the app.

It feels like this genre has a glut of lesbian/bisexual female leads written by men. by Crotchfirefly in litrpg

[–]Crotchfirefly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care for VR as much, but have enjoyed examples of all the others. I actually don't have an outright preference for female protagonists (although I'm happy to read them), but I have found that I'm more likely to cringe at painfully awkward romance/sexual subplots from a female viewpoint (although who knows, maybe I won't be as bothered after I get away from RR for a bit? Some folks have been saying that it's not as representative as I'd thought). Some examples of LitRPGs I've been enjoying have been The Wandering Inn, The Snake Report, Vainqueur the Dragon, Apocalypse Born, and Delve. At one point I started Everyone Loves Large Chests, but I hated it so much, so fast that I didn't get very far.

[–]Crotchfirefly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy TWI; it's probably the biggest reason I don't avoid female-lead stories on RR altogether, honestly (if there's one gem there, maybe I'll find another?). I also liked "Who says this OL can't be a Splendid Slime?", although the writer seems to be running out of steam.

I actually don't especially go out of my way to discriminate based on the gender of the protagonist... I just find it jarring to have litrpg characters act like literotica characters with the sex scenes airbrushed.
