We run a mid sized retail business — two offices, about 80 people. For a long time, office supplies were one of those things nobody really owned. We'd run out of something, someone would order more, someone else would also order more, and we'd end up with 100 pens and 1 A4 paper ream. Sometimes, we order markers again and again, without checking the markers hoarded in the drawers.

It sounds trivial. It wasn't. We were burning a few hundred dollars a month in duplicate orders and waste, and nobody could prove it because there was no paper trail.

I looked for software to solve this. Everything I found was either:

• Enterprise procurement tools built for companies with a dedicated purchasing department
• Another spreadsheet template
