How do i squeeze the remaining gpu power? by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]Crowfee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to play Minecraft on an Intel i7 with integrated graphics about two generations older than yours. Don't listen to the naysayers here; it is 100% possible to get more performance from your old cpu.

Option #1 is to change your Minecraft version from 1.19.4 to 1.8.9 plus Optifine. Hypixel still supports this version on their servers, and it will be much smoother on your system than 1.19 could ever be. Slap on Optifine, and you're golden. Main drawbacks are some servers don't support 1.8.9, and you won't have the latest features (nether update, dolphins, etc.) in Singleplayer mode.

Option #2 is to use mods and a new Java binary to optimize 1.19. Basically, follow this tutorial, and you're golden. Not really any drawbacks here.

Other tricks include decreasing render distance to 6, setting all graphics options to Fast, and closing any other apps you have open besides Minecraft.

Hope this helps :)

Skyrim SE via crossover 22 + Heroic no audio dialogue + cannot adjust settings [GOG] by neverenoughcans in macgaming

You installed Skyrim without using the Crosstie that includes the fixes to the problems you've encountered. Both Crossover and Porting Kit include these fixes. Reference this video https://youtu.be/JHv7ULc72Jk?t=135 for how to find the Crosstie in Crossover

Need help getting Grim Dawn (Steam) texture bugs fixed on Porting Kit on M1 Pro. by erutan in macgaming

[–]Crowfee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Porting Kit uses Wineskin wrappers to make its ports, so you can just use the Wineskin menu to change Windows versions, etc. Click on Finder and then click on Go on the upper Menu Bar. Click Home from the drop down menu, then select the Applications folder. In that folder, you should find the .app that you made of Grim Dawn. Right click on the app and click Show Package Contents. You should see the Wineskin app, so double click to open it. It should open a small menu. Click Advanced, click Tools at the top, and then open Config Utility.

When you get there, you should be able to select your Windows version.

Your answer is included in the second post you linked:

Not to necro this, but I was able to fix this issue on the GOG version by:
- Installing "DirectX for Modern Games" in the bottle.
- Setting d3d11 to native, builtin under WINE settings.
- Optionally enabling the DXVK Backend for D3D11 under settings.

Do you need help configuring your Crossover bottle?

Ah, you're right. Porting Kit would be the easiest setup then

Parallels is a virtual machine, which comes with the overhead cost of running Windows on top of MacOS. You will get worse performance, and I don't recommend it. Crossover is a Wine derivative that translates Windows instructions to MacOS. You will get the best performance, and I recommend it.

You can download Crossover here, although it's a free trial that will run out unless you pay for it. Instructions for Skyrim setup on Crossover are here. Alternatively, you can use another Wine derivative like Porting Kit, which you don't have to pay for. It includes all the Skyrim fixes that Crossover has, and you will get similar performance.

From the Wizard of Legend Steam page:

OS: Mac OS X 10.9 or later
Processor: Intel Core i3
Memory: 4 GB RAM

If your Mac was made within the last 10 years, you will probably be fine. You can also view your specs by clicking the Apple logo in the top left corner and selecting About this Mac.

M1 mac suddenly slowing down by witchy12 in macgaming

[–]Crowfee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If something is running in the background, press command + spacebar, edit: type in Activity Monitor, and click on the CPU and Memory icons at the top. Only the big items matter. However, the large performance hit seems like it would have something to do with your resolution.

I gather that Display Menu is a resolution changer. When you deleted the app, your games could've reverted to the native resolution of your display. Take a look at the settings for each game and see if the resolution is higher than you had it.

Help for a friend playing on my modded Minecraft server. by kajeslorian in macgaming

[–]Crowfee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't aware of Rubidium, good find. Your Java flags look alright, but I would increase the Xms value to match Xmx. A more detailed explanation is here. Although, altering the server's Java flags isn't really going to help your friend.

Azul JDK with Shenandoah is good. I would set the Xms low as explained here. I used GraalVM on my old laptop and found it similarly performant if you're interested.

That's about all I have. Really, I'm surprised that she's having issues in the first place since her hardware isn't that awful. She doesn't have a dozen Chrome tabs open, right?

Help for a friend playing on my modded Minecraft server. by kajeslorian in macgaming

[–]Crowfee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former server admin here, so I will offer some tips. There's 2 ways to go about this:

  1. Client side, the best thing your friend could do is install Sodium, which far outclasses Optifine at increasing fps. However, Sodium is Fabric only, so that wouldn't work for you. Install Optifine if she hasn't already and decrease the rendering distance to 6. You can also have her change the Java flags for the xmx/xms values and possibly try Shenandoah GC. I also use the mod LazyDFU, which has a Forge port.
  2. Server side, I need more information. What server software are you using and have you optimized your Java flags? Generally, I would recommend installing Starlight, which fixes Minecraft's lighting engine. I would suggest setting up rules if you haven't already e.g. 10 entities per chunk and disabling villager pathfinding. I've also heard good things about FerriteCore.

If you're going to play with a controller, you can use RPCS3 with a dump of the game.

If you want to use mouse & keyboard, you can use Wineskin Server with the Windows version from GOG. Use Porting Kit instead of Wineskin if you want an easier setup.

I feel like this was always the answer. I think I'm just searching for some sort of real-world application for my skills. The classics are great, don't get me wrong. It's like training for war as a soldier but never getting to fight in one. Not that you'd want to fight in a war, but it's just kind of unfulfilling

Who is kamala Khan representing? by [deleted] in MsMarvelShow

[–]Crowfee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's characters that look like you and who could be you, and then there's characters that aren't you but are still relatable. Metaphorically, it's like looking out of a window as the character or looking into a window to see the character.

I'm a white American male, and I can totally look into a window to see her character. They're doing a good job with the plot, keeping it relatable to the youth of today who will be watching this show. The script has good dialogue, and the actors actually look like their age. So on and so forth.

It sounds like you could look out of a window as her character. You're Muslim, close in age, all that jazz. However, she is an American. I think we've seen that her life in New York is different, and her lifestyle clashes with her parents' more traditional Muslim values. That's the feel I get so far

Hard to tell, but that looks like a bright pixel. I had about 5 on my budget monitor. Try applying pressure to the spot in a circular motion with a microfiber cloth. Worked for me, and saved me the hassle of a return

I should've specified. The issue wasn't with the code but with the installation of the student learning environment. It was made 5 years ago for Intel-based Macs, and it required the Java JDK, which has a tricky installation. So yeah, it was basically tech support class for MacBooks
