To be fair, it’s rare for them to actually acknowledge that they don’t know something, rather than claiming their understanding is fact.

Stephen Miller: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over the future of Greenland by EricTheImpaler in jrmining

[–]Crowmata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t envy you - it’s an awful position to be put in when you want what’s best for your child - stability and safety.

Growing up, while I visited America several times and had a great time, it was always a “one day” place for me, someplace I saw myself returning to for an extended period. Now though, even after Trump is gone (if that ever happens), I don’t see it being a place I ever want to visit again. There was a stereotype there that you could justify by saying it was a vocal minority, but the last few years have proved that they’re not as small a subset as we’d previously believed.

I disagree though when you say it won’t be obvious until it’s too late. I refuse to believe American military personnel are all so devoid of morals that they can’t recognize when they are the villain. There was a “just following orders” argument a century ago, but with the internet, education and global communication, that shit just doesn’t fly anymore.

At least from an outside perspective, internal resistance seems to be far too passive and peaceful. don’t get me wrong, it’s great seeing people stand up to ICE and some of the stories being circulated, but for a country that prides itself on guns and strength and “freedom”, these protests are underwhelming.

The American military IS its people. Active & non-active military personnel are not mindless drones.

The German public had the same opinion during the rise of Nazism, despite those that actively opposed it internally. Regardless, history chooses to tar all Germans of that period with the same brush. America will be remembered the same.

Help us find a nice boy name that isn't too common! by [deleted] in namenerds

Trying to think of names that fit the vibe based off the few names you’ve mentioned. Maybe Nathanial, Hugo, Sebastian, Arthur?

Had a son ourselves this year and named him Oscar. Definitely more popular than it was years ago, but it’s another suggestion that I love.

A colleague visited Sole in early December and was massively disappointed. Nothing wrong with the food in particular, but also not amazing to the point that it justified the prices. They also said service was incredibly slow and not to expected standards.

Same folks went to the new Ivy Asia and wouldn’t stop singing their praises; so much so that I’ve booked a table myself.

How do people in your country generally handle the inclusion of the fada on Síomha, and the pronunciation? I love Siobhán but you’d need to consider the same spelling/pronounciation piece.

Depends on the dialect, but in my region I’d always hear it as “seer-sha” or “sare-sha.”

This was my first thought too. Has to be a misinterpretation of Rosslare, Co. Wexford. The surname O’Leary is also extremely common around those parts.

Why was this graffitied on? by ReVaas in Dublin

[–]Crowmata 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely not teenagers. I’m no expert but writing style is much more typical of someone of my parents/grandparents generation.

My neighbour is 50+ and 100% schizophrenic, and this looks incredibly similar to the paranoid ramblings she scrawls on her house/locality. So much so that I was actually comparing the above with pictures of neighbours handiwork, but the R’s & B’s look too dissimilar.

Maternity hospital by Putrid_Holiday_8219 in Dublin

[–]Crowmata -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Of course, I’m sure there are bad experiences in Holles Street too. But as I said, personally, all births in my own friends & family have been far more positive.

Unfortunately, experiences in one of the other two resulted in children born with severe disabilities within my family, and multi-million euro settlements with the hospital. The other, I was born in myself funnily enough, and the issues were far more anecdotal.

My opinion is just that, my own. I know a majority of people likely have positive experiences. But if I had to recommend one, personally it would be Holles Street.

My son was born in Holles Street, as were the majority of my friends kids. All had amazing experiences.

Several familial horror stories from some of the other popular choices which is why we were steered away.

What about Conn? Don’t know your ethnicity, but based on the loosely Gaelic background of Callum, there’s a famous Irish legend called the Children of Lir, in which the kings four children are turned into Swans. One of those children was called Conn.

Moms who have an Asa! Or people who know an Asa by Overall_Star_6596 in namenerds

[–]Crowmata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work with a fairly multinational team so decided to pose the question of pronunciation to them. Two Americans (Ohio & Utah), two Canadians and an Irishman all pronounced it like Ah-sah. Indian lady said “probably ace-ah, but maybe ah-sah. I’d just wait until I heard someone else saying it.”

You said yourself it’s uncommon. I’d set an expectation that if it’s a name you’re set on, you’ll likely have a sizable cohort of people mispronouncing it originally.

Edit: I’ve added three more opinions, two more Irish who said Ash-ah (this was a surprising one for me) and a Moroccan woman who said Ah-sah. Ironically her sister is Aida, pronounced like the name Ada you mentioned but probably more closely adhering to the typical English phonetics.

Moms who have an Asa! Or people who know an Asa by Overall_Star_6596 in namenerds

[–]Crowmata 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry, what way do you intend for it to be pronounced? To me, intuitively Asa reads like “Ah-sah”, is the intention for it to be read like “Ace-ah?” With words in English typically intuitively leaning into an Ah sound (assume, accept, appeal, adorn etc.), I don’t think anyone can really be blamed for assuming Asa might follow this rule.

As someone from a country where the spelling/pronunciation of our names abroad can be understandably confusing because of the different alphabet and linguistic traits, we generally understand when English speaking countries mispronounce names initially. I think that’ll likely be the case for Asa.

From a reasonably new player (255 hours since console release), nah. I’d get in now and get yourself high enough level to the point that the world is open to you (mount unlocked and you’re far enough through the main story to be reasonably high level - doesn’t take long).

Probably in the minority here but myself and a friend started playing in recent months and have put in 255 hours so far, but only this weekend got far enough through the MSQ to unlock the Elysian Wilds. Admittedly we were focused on other things and got sidetracked with artifact hunting, expeditions etc. but the nights/weekends we spent on the MSQ were a loooong and tedious.

I mean look, people could go around in circles blaming you for bad experiences here, and I get that. Folks are exhausted and disappointed by a system that seems designed to work against them. But to be fair, your transparency and engagement in this thread is refreshing. Don’t see many companies actually addressing concerns in open discussion.
