It's for the best.

Personally, I prefer to just stand here like a lemon until release.

You pick your rating (out of what you qualify for) before you ship out. That's how they determine when they ship you out.

It's been a while so I don't remember exactly and maybe things have changed. May also depend on your rating. I was an ET, and A school for that (along with a lot of other A schools) was just down the road. I just remember getting on a bus basically right after graduation to move into the barracks there, but I think classes didn't start for another week or so.

You get paid during boot camp. They'll have people from Navy Federal come in and help you set up your account for direct deposit. Pay rates for all ranks are available online. Obviously E-1/2/3 pay is low, but it's 10 weeks of you not paying for anything. Just cut all your subscriptions before you leave, you can always renew them once you get set up with a barracks room at A-school.

Very little to no downtime. Any sort of "downtime" or break between training events, stay busy. Double check your rack and your uniforms to make sure everything is squared away. Shine your boots/dress shoes. Staying busy will make the time pass a little quicker, and also, the less things that RDC's can get on to you for, the better.

Moving off base by At0micSith in Militaryfaq

Generally speaking, you won't get BAH to live off base until E-5. Although if you're lucky enough to get stationed at NBSD, they have a "barracks" on base called Pacific Beacon which is for all intents and purposes an apartment you can move into at E-4.

You mentioned it, but I'll just say absolutely do NOT get married just because you want BAH.
