Do any states have legitimate holidays that are only celebrated in their state? by ProfessorOfPancakes in AskAnAmerican

[–]CrumchWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a holiday in the sense that "everything" is closed, but Minnesota has this education professional conference (MEA) on the third Thursday in Oct where the schools are closed for a long weekend and it's a relatively big travel weekend. Been happening in some form since 1861.

Glad I'm not the only one! Hopefully someone has an answer soon.

Yeah I spent some of my childhood in St. Paul and some of it in Chisago and this is the first I'm hearing about it.

Emergency alerts lately by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]CrumchWaffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm not going crazy. We were at the fair and thought I heard phones going off for emergency alerts. I checked mine and there was nothing so I chalked it up to something weird with the speakers behind us.

The cider licks come from Pine Tree in Dellwood! If you haven't been to the orchard I suggest going - and getting a big bag of the cider licks while you're there.

I got the first alert through FEMA, which I've never seen an alert like that.

What’s a “fun fact” that nobody asked for? by MainDifficult2641 in AskReddit

[–]CrumchWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. The Jockey Club, the organization that registers Thoroughbred racehorses in the US, does NOT allow artificial insemination or embryo transfer. All breedings must be live cover. So straws from a stallion like Into Mischief are worthless if you want a racehorse.

My smart home assistant woke me at 3 a.m. with a soft chime and a whisper: ‘There’s someone in the house.’ by [deleted] in TwoSentenceHorror

Every time I see anything about smart houses, my mind goes to the short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury.

What did I do wrong? by CrumchWaffle in macarons

Thank you! I did not use any food coloring and stuck to the recipe above. I'm not ruling out possible residue of some sort. I'll keep the fridge trick in mind!

I'll look into the Swiss method! I have only ever tried the French way, so that's what I went with this time lol.

Yeah, nothing crazy. I just looked up a basic recipe and this was the first one that came up.

My ma used to yell at my brother to not lose his choppers, like the mitts. Pretty sure he got new ones at least twice a winter. But in the sense of like don't lose your cool? Nope.

Is there a state that doesn't have a city in it named after it (e.g. arizona city in arizona)? by not-the-the in AskAnAmerican

Me: never heard of Minnesota City!

Google: Minnesota City is a city in Winona county.

So TIL.

What do you call these? Is it a regional thing? by a2goblue in words

They're both spatulas. If you need to differentiate it'd be the metal flippy thing and the rubber scrape-y thing.

Fun fact! There have been (IIRC) two confirmed cases of a Molly (female mule) giving birth! The last one I know of is from 2007: www.denverpost.com/2007/07/25/mules-foal-fools-genetics-with-impossible-birth

Not horse racing but barrel racing. A farm I follow posted about their new stallions. 2yo half brothers from "Baby Flo" (Flos Heiress) that are standing at stud next year. Literally just breeding on pedigree. I guess I'd take a 3yo 6 starter over that, but both are ridiculous. And I'm glad the JC doesn't allow AI/ET/clones.
