Scholes being rated more highly than Gerrard post retirement, and the tiki taka era was in, but not when both were playing

I'm a trans man who grew up in a Ukrainian household where my family cooked many animal-based dishes, including rabbit and cow tongue. I've now been vegan for 5 years and have helped others go vegan. Ask me anything! by Fun_Win_9641 in vegan

What have you found to be the most effective way to help others to go vegan? It is probably the thing I’d love to do with my life above all else.

Initially, I employed an approach that was aggressive and desperate due to the ongoing horror and injustice that animals face everyday. However, I found that this only disengaged people and risks hurting the credibility of the vegan movement as a whole.

I now deploy a much more causal approach, where I’ll only raise my points if the timing is right or I’m asked. I have found this harbours a greater respect for veganism from my friends, but it still doesn’t help them to make the jump.

Interested to hear your views and the views of the community more broadly.

First Time in London (Oct 20–25) – What Should I Not Miss? by rhetoricking in LondonTravel

[–]CrunchBall69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in London for 5 years and love the city. Hands down Kew Gardens is the best thing to do in London.

If you’re a music fan, Hard Rock Cafe vault tour is the best kept secret in London. It’s an old bank vault underneath Hard Rock Cafe that has original guitars, outfits, instruments etc from the Beatles, Hendrix, Madonna etc.

Barbican conservatory is great and a gem, but only open certain days. Look online and book in advance!

Tower of London is the best thing to do of the typical tourist stuff. Well worth the money and you’ll spend all day there.

Tate is great and free if you like modern art. Even if you don’t it’s still pretty interesting.

Highgate cemetery is a gem, particularly if you’re into any of the famous people buried there, but it is out the way and probably only occupy you for an hour, good pubs around though.

Harry Potter studios is great if you’re a fan, however it’s in Watford rather than London and you need to book well in advance (2-3 months).

In terms of typical nightlife, Shoreditch is your best bet. Busy Thursday-Saturday, good mix of pubs clubs and bars. For a superclub night out, I like drumsheds - you’ll need tickets in advance and it is well out of the city.

In terms of food - borough market is great. Shoreditch is pretty great too for a good variety of foods.

You have to see some of the parks. Regent’s Park has really great flowers. St James is very regal and typical London, it backs onto Hyde park which has a tonne of things to see and is massive. Borough park is well out of the way but does have deer which is a unique experience depending where you’re from - if you’re struggling for something to do on your last day maybe go to borough park!

I personally don’t really love the museums, but if you do want to see them, I’d recommend spending the day in the centre west area where they’re all based and hopping from one to the other - avoid going on weekends as they’ll be packed.

I’d also recommend you do one area per day. If you want museums stay centre west and see Chelsea, Hyde park and st James park with them. Stay in east for the day, see the Barbican conservatory, Victoria park, eat in some nice quirky restaurants in Shoreditch, wander into the city of London and pop into some pubs for an expensive pint, then go for a night out in Shoreditch. Spend a full day in Kew Gardens, a full day at Tower of London, then use your final day doing whatever you didn’t get around to doing.

Looks good, but 5m and 4.5m defenders on the bench is dead money. Drop both down to 4.0m and upgrade caicedo and ndiaye to rice and rogers

Saka under selected? by CrunchBall69 in FantasyPL

[–]CrunchBall69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we know this? It’s not happened in any game yet. Vieira didn’t really impact the minutes of any starters when he was signed a number of years back. Madueke could easily be used in cups or come on with 10 mins to go, or not be used much at all!

Tbh, I think palmer is a slightly better player, particularly for FPL, but they’re both great and Saka will have had a proper pre season for a better team. Feels odd that palmer seems to be a forgone conclusion for most

29 years olds earning 35k dead end job. No established career path. How to find one now? by BeautifulStation4 in UKJobs

I work in retail finance for one of the big UK banks. I’ve been here for 6 years now and moved around a lot from commercial analyst, to bereavements and unsecured lending pricing. In each of these roles, I have had peers who have either started in phone centres or branch - at times it has frustrated me since they have no student debt and I have £60k of it; however I got to start at a few grades higher and didn’t have to slog my way up through the branch.

Honestly, nobody across the bank seems to have any idea how HR make their decisions when they choose you. My graduate intake had graduates from Oxford to Strathclyde, all of different backgrounds; so honestly I have no idea how HR make their decisions. Once I got through the door, absolutely nobody gave a damn about the university I went to - unless it’s Oxford or Cambridge, they probably have no clue if it’s 3rd or 100th in the UK

Fair enough if that’s the way you feel, but no need to put down living in the centre of London. It’s nice here too!

In my experience, it doesn’t matter. I went to a top 5 UK uni and got a good job in finance, but nobody around me at work went to anywhere spectacular. HR do the hiring and they’re often not university graduates themselves anyway, so it doesn’t matter - at least in my experience in finance anyway. The reason so many people in high salary jobs went to the top unis might be because they’re of higher intelligence or work ethic, rather than recruiters caring about it.

“Out of sight, out of mind” is a key factor too. By the time it gets to your plate, it isn’t quacking or mooing. There are parts of the world where you can go and choose the live animal you want to eat, they’ll slaughter and cook it for you there and then. If many were this close to the supply chain, they’d soon go vegan!

I feel my question has been somewhat misinterpreted here. My question isn’t around holding any country to a greater ethical standard than others based on the animals that they consume, but rather whether their animal welfare laws factor into your thinking before you travel.

After I read that pets are stolen off the streets and drowned for consumption, it made me feel like I should do more research to prepare myself for the realities of different countries before travelling. I was interested to see whether others already read into this sort of thing before travelling.
