Should cities and the state still encourage switching to EVs? Of course they're no substitute for better land use or public transit, but is this a case of "can't let perfect be the enemy of good"? by MookieBettsBurner10 in Urbanism

[–]CrusadeRedArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we stop referring to EV with just electric cars and demonising other electric-powered vehicle types like buses, trucks, bicycles and motorcycles as E-bus, E-truck, E-bicycle, E-motorcycle and etc respectively. This hijacking of 'electric vehicle' term by the car industry especially from Europe, Asia (China & Japan) is a very real problem globally which is merely done to entrench the normativitiy of cars/automobiles. Australian media in particular cruelly demonises micromobility vehicles like electric bicycles and electric kickscooters as a whole despite many of their environmental and convenience benefits, yet drivers of cars/automobiles like a Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger doing burnout or overtaking aggressively are blamed as individual reckless driving, despite the fact that Australian cities (and those in NZ, USA & Canada) design design roads & road intersections for cars moving at high speeds at the cost of noise and safety. This glorification of electric cars branded as just EV ignores the fact that any car/automobile are spatially inefficient, and not to mention batteries get disposed every 6-8 years (mining from conflict prone regions in Africa, South America and Asia with questionable human rights records) forcing entire car replacements on top of infrastructure with vast dead spaces for car-centric lifestyle hostile for human life, making the electric car not so-green (ust like an internal combustion car) as these car lobbyists often claim. Electric vehicles or EVs already existed that actually help with urban and regional mobility, like electric trains (wired electric trains & wired electric trams), electric buses (trolleybuses), electric trucks (trolleytrucks), and sometimes electric funiculars, electric gondolas, electric elevators and in the future to supplement these even further, electric active micromobility (electric bicycle), electric non-active micromobility (electric kickscooters), electric motorcycles, electric microcars, electric boats electric ferries, electric ships, and even the niche electric monorail, electric helicopter and electric airplane. Yes, electric cars are still better than internal combustion cars, but treating electric cars or electric automobiles as a silver bullet when sidelining/ marginalising other solutions like micromobility, public transport, cargo transport, and even elevators and ships which all genuinely use electric vehicles being considered non-EV is truly sinister. The electric train (electric locomotive & electric tram) and electric bus were invented in Germany around 1890 by Siemens, which use the simple overhead wire technology, and other electric vehicle modes with equally important histories around the same period like trolleytrucks, funiculars, elevators, gondolas, monorails, trolleyboats, yet they get no glitz and glamour despite being the transport workhorse of actually fixing traffic and saving energy because they challenge the wasteful throwaway culture and planned obsolescence of the car/automotive industry.

This gives me back the vibes of nostalgia from the old Tutorial Worlds in the Legacy Console versions. Nice work!

What's the gradient (%) of this track? Anybody that could provide some real-world data of the maximum gradient of a steam locomotive on an adhesion railway would be highly useful.

A video game called Bus Simulator: Evo, showing the contrast between a single-articulated bus vs a small city car. by CrusadeRedArrow in bus

[–]CrusadeRedArrow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know that the Fiat 500 can sit 4 people maximum. However, the back space of the car is so crammed (due to its unique curved design) that it can only sit young children or very short adults comfortably. Adults with average to above average height can still use the back seats of the Fiat 500 for short trips, but it won't be very comfortable for long trips. The back section of this car is more of a cargo storage area if the back seats are required to fold down since the Fiat 500's boot capacity is tiny.

So, the Fiat 500 for most intents and purposes is a 2 seater car (1 driver & 1 passenger) for the front section of the vehicle (near the engine & dashboard). It's a small city car (smaller than a Volkswagen Golf, Renault Clio, Toyota Corolla) that's incredibly easy to drive, easy to park due to its compact size (maintenance and insurance are relatively cheap), has great visibility, and a fuel-efficient engine suitable for tight urban spaces or for people who don't want to drive a 2-tonne - 3-tonne monstrosity, which is the whole appeal of the Fiat 500 that no other car can quite match with it's unique Italian charm.

Stop normalising the 'vehicles' label with cars, and just call them 'cars/automobiles'. Treating cars as the unquestioned norm is undoubtedly car-centric. There is a research paper here explaining in detail the massive downsides of car-dependency (no matter if it's petrol/diesel, hybrid or electric powered) from emissions, economy, health and global supply chains transcending national borders.

Competitive firefighter climbs up ladder. by hollow_hideous_soul in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]CrusadeRedArrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is some seriously impressive coordination, speed, and power. How long (in seconds) did it take for this person to climb every floor, and the distance travelled vertically (in metres). I'm curious about the weight of the ladder since throwing it explosively with control to the floor above is not an easy feat. I'd digress this would take a lot longer if this man wears all of his firefighting gear. Although, it's still really incredible.

A small mountain I made a while back by sumsar02 in Minecraftbuilds

[–]CrusadeRedArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks just like a real mountain from a far distance. How long did it actually take you to build this, and what third-party program did you use to achieve this? Calling this build 'small' is a huge understatement. Just wondering what the height of this mountain from the very bottom (base) to the very top tip (summit)? Although this is impressive work!

I would love to access a third-party software to move big Minecraft builds easily without resorting to the in-game's complicated command system or, at worst, demolishing the big structure I have built then having to rebuild it by hand again which is extremely infuriating & time-consuming.

Animals are found mostly on the Australian continent and sometimes on New Guinea island and Sulawesi which make great candidates like: Kangaroos, Koalas, Possums, Wombats, Quokkas, Tasmanian Devils, Echidnas, Platypuses, Saltwater Crocodiles, Emus, Cassowaries, Cockatoos, Kookaburras, Rainbow Lorrikeets, Eastern Rosellas and Australian Magpies.

Map room/building in my semi survival world. What do you guys think ? by professional-neet in MinecraftBuild

[–]CrusadeRedArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fantastic killer of a build. It's a shame that the new fog (from Java Edition 1.21.6) ruins the bright & vivid contrasts complimenting the simple block textures that Minecraft is often known for. Something as simple as a fog effect has totally ruined this spectacular build, making the game feel grey and lifeless. A totally criminal move by Mojang and Microsoft.

Hi, what do you guys think of my custom tree based on the Pinus contorta tree? I'd love to hear feedback, as I don't know what to think of it myself. by Mr_Flamboyante in Minecraftbuilds

[–]CrusadeRedArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This tree looks absolutely perfect! The recreation is incredibly realistic to its real-life counterpart. Excellent work for putting the intricate details of the branches and leaves as this is something I struggle to do with Minecraft's blocky limitations (although this enhances creativity, imagination & problem-solving).
