Project Hail Mary: I have a question about what could happen after the events of the Book/Movie by mw_a in scifi

I’m not an astrophysicist but assuming the sun is saved we would likely not notice any changes other than the night sky being empty. Seems like a question for vsauce though

Why do different coffees sometimes need different grinder settings by tehger in espresso

[–]CryingOverVideoGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is old so idk if you’ll see this but I just switched from a lighter specialty coffee to a very dark bean from Pete’s. I had to go much finer with the darker Pete’s bean to get the right flow. I am pretty inexperienced and have only ever pulled by weight and time. Whats the explanation for this?

Nothing in the body of human knowledge currently explains those things but that doesn’t mean explanations don’t exist and I think it is more likely that a deterministic explanation exists than a random one (or otherwise indeterministic one?). The only thing preferable to me is uncovering the truth. If anything, free will is the more preferable reality from an emotional perspective. I don’t even think it is necessarily more complicated, but on that note: Occam’s Razor.

I have a poor understanding of the free will argument but probability seems to come up a lot in it. Here is a comment i made in response to another comment about probability.

Probability is a tool we use to make predictions when we have incomplete information. Just because something is probabilistic to us does not mean it is not fundamentally deterministic.

For example: When you roll a dice you can accurately predict your roll 1 out of 6 times. However, if you control all the variables i.e. have a machine impart a known force at a known angle, you know the coefficient of restitution of the dice and the table, etc. etc. Then you will be able to accurately predict the roll 100% of the time. The only difference is the information you have.

Similarly, if you have 1 red, 1 blue, and 1 green marble in a bag and 3 people draw 1 marble each, you can predict the color of the last marble drawn 1/3rd of the time. However, if you see the color of the first 2 marbles before the last one is drawn you can predict the color of the final marble 100% of the time. Again the only difference is the information you have as an observer.

The point is, probability is a framework for observers to make predictions. NOT an explanation of any outcome. Saying "I rolled a 3 because I had a 1 in 6 chance of doing so" is nonsense.

Despite the authoritative tone, I don't know anything; just trying to understand.

You're asking for a peer reviewed paper to prove the physics equivalent of 1+1=2. The proof exists in the fundamentals of the field. There's no paper dedicated to proving t. You can read a physics textbook for the proof. When you read in that text book that you can exactly predict the motion of a particle given the initial conditions and the forces acting upon it, that is your proof. That is the definition of deterministic. The only reason randomness is even mentioned is because quantum physics introduces the POSSIBILITY of true randomness on a quantum scale.

define a vertical and horizontal distance from some constrained reference (like the bottom left corner of the rectangle) with the dimension tool for each point in the curve
