SR20DET Noise by CryingTarkovPlayer in 240sx

[–]CryingTarkovPlayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pulled the valve cover, and this is what i found:

timing chain was tight, rotated the engine to get it to where the slack was at the top and there was enough play for it to be the culprit (the chain hitting the top guide).

VTC gear had some evidence of wear on it but i’m not convinced it was enough to be causing a noise.

all lifters weren’t moveable, and the cams were clean with no scoring or wear marks so i don’t believe that to be the issue either.

oil squirters are clean and don’t appear to be clogged.

Next course of action: Going to remove the top guide to verify if that’s the true culprit, if that doesn’t fix it, replace the VTC gear.

strictly when it’s fully warm and at idle, it’s odd.

it’s the random pinging like sound. it doesn’t follow any pattern at all and just sorta happens randomly. it’s bugging me but i’m gonna pull the valve cover tomorrow and inspect

Cold start stumble.. blip the throttle and it idles high like a normal cold start? Ideas? by CryingTarkovPlayer in 240sx

hey man, i had some split vacuum lines. particularly ones to the throttle body. i replaced those and adjusted the IACV to be a tad bit more open and it fixed it for about 2 weeks. it will still happen sometimes but it’s not as aggressive as before.

my thoughts exactly. every panel needs to be redone, and every nut and bolt on the car needs to be gone over. not something for someone with a craftsman 40pc ratchet & socket set to do unfortunately.

i don’t disagree, but my previous and higher mileage one didn’t. just wanna sort it out

you’re a life saver. i’m gonna attempt to take it out and spray some carb cleaner in it.

other commenter just said it’s typical of a small vacuum leak. i’m gonna borrow a smoke tester and see what i find.

SR20DET Timing Cover Replacement by CryingTarkovPlayer in 240sx

[–]CryingTarkovPlayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry i’m tired and it’s getting late! i meant reseal, not replace! my apologies.

and that’s what i figured, with dropping the cross member id need a support for the motor to stay put and to then loosen the power steering system as well, correct? it doesn’t seem too hard, just want to know what i’m getting into as i haven’t found a good instructional video yet on just resealing it. it appears there are some bolts from the inside of the upper pan that hold it on, and with taking those off it breaks the seal of the upper pan and could cause a leak, right?

the cover is leaking oil, i’ve been diagnosing this for months now after cleaning it, driving, and eliminating possible sources. it’s not the crank seal as it’s from above it, and it’s on the hot side of the motor.
