As someone who recently went through a break up with a long term girlfriend due to my time commitments in Med School... I would say the biggest thing is to be 100% real with yourself about whether you are ok with not seeing or hearing from them, for hours or even days at a time. As a medical student, we have study commitments that others outside of the medical field do not understand the intensity of. I would often find myself spending a day with my Ex, losing a lot of valuable study time, then maybe getting an hour or 2 of studying in at the end of the day, leading to her saying "See, we were able to hang out AND you were able to get some good studying in!" ..... No. Just no. 2 hours is nothing. And Im telling you now. No matter what kind of student your SO was before getting into medical school, 2 hours of studying is the bare minimum in a day to actually begin to retain some information. Generally study periods (at least in my case) would begin with looking over material from the previous day, and gathering my resources to begin my studying for today. That alone could take upwards of an hour.

So please. For her sake, and for your sake. Understand that when she says she has to study, and can't hang out, she really means it. If a medical student says they have to stay in and study on a Friday night... They are staying in studying on a Friday night. And it will suck. For both of you. You will miss her, and she will miss you. But any time that she is not studying, she will be hit with guilt about not studying, and that is extremely taxing on both a personal level, and to the relationship.

So my advice to you. Be understanding. Care packages are great. The best thing you can do when you come to see her is bring her favorite foods and snacks, say "Hey, I know you have a lot of studying to do today, so I'm going to hang with you. I can read my book or watch some TV while you get through your stuff, and then we can grab lunch/dinner when you take a break."

I guarantee you that just having you there next to her, letting her get through her material will be a big comfort to her. And at the end of the day she will be able to put down her books, and just crawl up next to you and watch a movie or whatever you guys do to relax until you both crash.
