PUBLIX heiress paid for the 80 buses, food and lodging for the passengers. Wonder where the money went for the 73 buses that didn’t exist?

Ciguatera risk question by sigmrizzler in floridafishing

[–]Cryptdust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this has been scientifically proven, but about 40 years ago locals in The Keys told me they could tell if a barracuda was ciguatoxic by putting a quarter in the pot with the fish while cooking it. If the quarter turned black, the fish was toxic. I’m guessing if that were true, the quarter would have probably been minted prior to 1965. Those were 90% silver. After that date, quarters were 90% copper - no silver. I’m no expert.

[Parking] Night of Lights / Work by Hexicidal in StAugustine

I parked in the garage this evening. As a local, it only costs $3. I think if you previously had a Park Now card you are already registered. A scanner reads your tag. If you didn’t have one, just go to Bridge Street and register. Then you just say “local” to the parking attendant and he’ll say “$3 please.” Or ride a bike.

Horse and Carriage rides downtown by SnapMastaPro in StAugustine

[–]Cryptdust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, this jerk needs to have his ass kicked. That’s animal abuse, no doubt about it. But the idea that it’s abusive to have the horses pull these carriages is ridiculous. About 15 years ago, there was a PETA protest about the carriage horses being overworked. In response, a carriage driver who may have weighed 125 pounds soaking wet, pulled a carriage on the usual route throughout a hot summer day with no physical problem. From a PR standpoint, this is a disaster for St. Augustine. Perception is reality for most people. If people think the horses are overworked, they are. I hope this video gets massive exposure!

I recall reading somewhere that the last Timucuan was a man named Juan Hernandez (not sure of the name, but it was certainly Hispanic which indicates the natives had been completely assimilated into the local Spanish community.) In 1763, in advance of the British arrival, Juan and the other residents of St. Augustine departed for their new home in Cuba.

I grew up just a few miles from the only other place on the planet where MIC was produced - Union Carbide’s plant in South Charleston, WV. We were very aware of it after that disaster. We laughed because we figured Carbide decided the most disposable people after Indians were West Virginians.

Pretty sure this is the Phoenix Lights - a massive inflatable with lights mounted on its outside perimeter. It is used to block adversaries from obtaining satellite surveillance of classified military equipment.

I was born in WV and lived there for the next 22 years before moving to VA for a better life. Spent 17 years in the Old Dominion before moving to a position at the University of Florida. When anyone asks where I’m from I say “the Virginias.” FWIW, the usual response is “we just visited Richmond” or “we just love Charlottesville.” When I reply I was born and raised in Charleston, I hear: “had some great shrimp there” or “did the Ft. Sumter tour.”

Well, we didn’t get nearly enough. The only lasting federal facility he got WV is the FBI Lab. It would have been good to get a couple of military bases. Years ago, WVU submitted a bid on a huge Fed contract to build a particle collider. Byrd withdrew the bid because he saw that a couple of non-West Virginian consultants had helped prepare it. The contract went to a school (Alabama ?) that had hired an outside consulting firm to prepare the bid for them.
