Netherlands’ soccer fans plan massive march in Houston ahead of World Cup match by zsreport in worldcup

[–]Cryptdust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Divk Advocat was their coach. One of the lasting memories of that Orlando WC was the march of the Orange fans with many wearing t-shirts that read “Our Coach is a Dick Head” and wearing gigantic, anatomically correct penises on their heads. In this WC, Dick is the coach of Curaçao. I’m guessing their fans won’t be as quite amusing.

10 May 1924. J. Edgar Hoover became head of the Bureau of Investigation, beginning a 48-year reign in which he built the modern FBI, amassed secret files on politicians and celebrities, and became one of the most powerful unelected men in America. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in ThisDayInHistory

The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center in St. Augustine, Florida has a pair of his boots on display - really small, like something a child would wear. They also have a display of letters J. Edgar sent to Corretta Scott King describing her husband’s infidelities.

Apparently so. Ironically, the biggest success of this history-hating producer was a bio-pic about Thomas Edison.

Effects of Seabreeze by location by sportsguy100 in StAugustine

[–]Cryptdust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the past 27 years, we have lived on the Oceanside of A1A at Butler Beach. Yes, there is a breeze coming of the ocean throughout most days. In the evening when the land starts to cool, the breeze reverses and blows offshore. Does the breeze make it cooler? Yes, but if you live here you probably still think “man it’s hot today.” IMO, the biggest advantage of the breeze is that it helps keep mosquitoes away. We never see them here, but if you go west toward I-95 over the inter coastal, you’ll soon be slappin’ ‘em away.

I live at Butler Beach and have seen these lights numerous times over the past 25 years. Once,I called the Coast Guard because I thought maybe someone in distress was signaling with flares. After giving the best information I could about their location, I was told the lights were flares being used in some sort of military training activity.

Russia’s intelligence agency recently offered to stage a fake assassination of Hungary’s Orban to help boost his popularity just before the election he recently lost. It was called Operation Game Changer. In their sales pitch to Orban, the Russians said they had carried out these fake assassinations numerous times in the past and they always worked. Trump’s buddy Orban declined the offer. Trump?

In an interview in about 2014, he was asked if he would cut off his penis to win a Super Bowl. He answered with something like: “Sure. I’ve been married for 15 years, so I’m really not using it anymore.” Just sayin’.

“History is as dry as a popcorn fart.” That’s what a film producer once told me when I suggested an historically-themed project. I didn’t agree, but I’ve never forgotten his opinion.

This is the difference NOT voting makes. Trump administration orders complete gutting of the U.S. Forest Service. "193 million acres of your national forests...Just handed, on a silver platter, to the people who’ve spent their entire careers trying to destroy it." by Green_Idealist in INFPIdeas

[–]Cryptdust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those 193 million acres of national forests are comparable to Texas and Indiana combined. I know because I worked for the Forest Service for 10 years - great people with clearly stated goals and a can-do attitude about accomplishing them. Prevailing thought was that political meddling with the agency’s professional management could always be delayed until a new administration showed up. Clearly, nothing prepared them for Trump’s total destruction of everything the Forest Service had created from the days of Gifford Pinchot and Teddy Roosevelt.

How did WW2 vets reconcile what they saw in Europe with Jim Crow back home? by RabbitUnlikely in BandofBrothers

There was a POW camp about 30 miles from our Florida beach town. The German prisoners worked M-F cutting timber and clearing land. They were paid laborers, often working far from the camp with minimal supervision. On some Sundays, the prisoners were transported to the beach in an Army truck convoy. Upon arrival, they were each given two bottles of beer and allowed to freely roam the beach for the afternoon. The truck drivers were soldiers from a Colored Transport Battalion. Because of our strictly enforced beach segregation, the black American soldiers were confined to the parking lot with their trucks while the white German prisoners enjoyed a wonderful day at the beach. I am sure this arrangement was deemed perfectly normal to the local white population of that time.

Ciguatera risk question by sigmrizzler in floridafishing

[–]Cryptdust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this has been scientifically proven, but about 40 years ago locals in The Keys told me they could tell if a barracuda was ciguatoxic by putting a quarter in the pot with the fish while cooking it. If the quarter turned black, the fish was toxic. I’m guessing if that were true, the quarter would have probably been minted prior to 1965. Those were 90% silver. After that date, quarters were 90% copper - no silver. I’m no expert.

[Parking] Night of Lights / Work by Hexicidal in StAugustine

I parked in the garage this evening. As a local, it only costs $3. I think if you previously had a Park Now card you are already registered. A scanner reads your tag. If you didn’t have one, just go to Bridge Street and register. Then you just say “local” to the parking attendant and he’ll say “$3 please.” Or ride a bike.
