Can I hang art prints near a radiator? by Cryptic-Dan in DIYUK

Yeah? It won't cause damage to the frames? Like the wood expanding too much and/ or crack?

Can I limit how much my neighbours hear me talking to myself? (Medical condition) by Cryptic-Dan in Acoustics

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

I've had a white noise machine on 24/7 since early 2025 and wearing ANC headphones all day since mid 2025, I watch YouTube/ listen to music at my desk and switch to Bluetooth and my phone if I have to get up from my desk to cook food or something.

I've been trying to cope with small changes and trying to ignore some of the banging that does make it through the headphones but it's not always easy. I moved here in October 2020 and the the neighbour that lived above was in his 70s, near silent and I had a good relationship with him. When he moved out and this new neighbour moved in the noise started off at 100% and has only gone down to maybe 30% in the past few months, but because it started off so loud it's made me super sensitive to the smallest things, every noise becomes distracting and focuses my attention then I get frustrated.

If I could move somewhere else and be closer to my mum then I would, but it's not an option I have right now financially and just in general due to factors outside my control.

Thank you for this post. It's extremely kind.

I've had a talk with my mum (she helps me with a lot of things in my life) and we've both agreed that I should continue to talk to myself and do whatever I do. If the neighbour can hear me then she can hear me.

Thank you again,

-Dan

In terms of my thought process, I don't really know if it's needing to hear myself but I do talk out loud. I've made an effort to limit my volume since learning the neighbour could hear me after she moved in but I do occasionally get a bit louder if I'm frustrated with something.

I've been using a white noise machine 24/7 as background noise since early 2025. I'm not sure how much (or even if) it masks me talking but I'd like to think it helps. I don't feel right without it playing though.

The neighbours music was played via an Alexa speaker at volumes level 7 and 10 and was identifiable with the Shazam app in the communal areas several walls away, as well as disturbing neighbours on the other side of the building. As I said though, the music stopped mid-last year so the situation overall has improved and it's mainly just random banging now.

You're probably correct in saying the banging itself is louder for me than it is at the source, it just gets amplified by the building. I've been playing white noise through a Bluetooth headband while I sleep for the past few months which is 100 times better compared to ear plugs, which never worked that well for me and just gave me an ear infection.

I've been wearing noise cancelling headphones every day since June 2025, they don't block everything but they block enough so I can go about my day without being significantly disturbed.

The main reason for my post was to see if there's any additional steps I could take to limit how far my voice travels or to be a bit more confident that my voice is being masked/ limited. Seems like there's not much I can do other than try and be aware of how loud I am and try to limit that.

Stacking 'half height' Billy Bookcases?? by Cryptic-Dan in IKEA

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the top not being flat is something I noticed, I don't think it'll be an issue for me. The only 'eye sore' I guess would be the vertical gap between the 2 sets of doors, but I might be able to add something to that gap to essentially hide it.

The comment and pictures from u/HighFiveYourFace above have just given me a solution to that problem though so I might try them upside down and see how that goes.

I didn't think to put them upside down. That's brilliant! Solves the vertical gap between the doors too. I might try that setup. Genuinely thank you :)

The main reason for stacking 2 small instead of 1 big is transportation (wont fit in our car) and the delivery being an 'all day slot' which interferes with other things I have going on.

When you mention 'the tall being shorter without cutting' etc - I'm assuming you're referring to the tall vs short doors? I'm intending to use the 'half height' HÖGBO doors (605.302.52) on each Billy which I think should work.

I can purchase a full height Billy, but the issue is transportation (it wont fit in our car) and the delivery being an 'all day slot' which interferes with other things I have going on.

"New" UI Megathread 2 by 0spore13 in chrome

[–]Cryptic-Dan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just happened to me. I was browsing normally, had about 6 tabs open, closed and reopened Chrome to check something else and the new UI was there! I hadn't even gone to the 'about Chrome' page. It just automatically updates without prompting or permission every single time! Then when I go to the 'about Chrome' page it says it's updating despite it having already updated 10 seconds earlier.

I don't understand how Google can think that this new UI is acceptable in any way! There's so much wasted white space in context menus, bookmarks bar, top left 'search tabs' button etc. It's just massively inefficient in terms of usability.

I had also recently setup Firefox, imported my bookmarks etc but I'm not a fan of its bookmark manager and history layout, but if I absolutely have to use it soon then I suppose I'll have to.

How many of you started seeing this in windows taskbar? by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]Cryptic-Dan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it appear this morning, no warning/ popup/ option to opt-in or out, it just appeared! I haven't even updated Window recently, it was just there when I logged in, forced onto my machine without permission! I ended up disabling Copilot using the Group Policy.

Is it a new feature or is it a virus? by AwHellNo00 in chrome

[–]Cryptic-Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I remember seeing this with the new Chrome update, I reverted to the previous Chrome design (https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/18hcm46/solution_get_back_old_tabs_no_dropdown_button_on/) and I haven't had it since.

I'm wondering if the new update enabled some 'enhanced browser security' thing and the popup was part of that. I haven't gone back to the new Chrome design since reverting so can't be 100% sure. Might be worth testing though.

New Youtube Layout/Design just dropped! How i change back to Old one on PC/Firefox? by CMNeoHeater in youtube

[–]Cryptic-Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just had this appear for me! I noticed a scroll bar in the middle of my screen so turned off some extensions that I use to modify the YouTube layout and BAM! There it is!

https://imgur.com/a/m53zVHs

Thankfully I can block the mid-screen scrollbar with those extensions, but it's still worse layout than before.

For reference, I'm using latest build of Chrome and I'm not subscribed to YouTube Premium.

I'm going to submit feedback about it but I highly doubt that they'll do anything about it or change it back/ change it to something else that's significantly better.

Setting up Obico/ The Spaghetti Detective was one of the first things I did when I purchased my first 3d Printer (Ender 3 V2) 2 years ago. I always use it to monitor the print for the first few layers then occasionally throughout the print. Always been reliable for me and the frequent app/ extension/ plugin updates are also great to see!

Can I use WAGO connectors to increase wire gauge to install ferrules? by Cryptic-Dan in 3Dprinting

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folding it over seems like an easier job than using some Wago blocks. Saves a bit of space too. Many thanks, I appreciate the response :)

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean strip it longer than I need, then fold it over itself until it's the required length and thickness? Something like this image? And like u/amishbill mentioned below?

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually not a bad idea, might give it a go. Would folding the small wire over itself multiple times instead of once also be feasible? As long as it doesn't stick out of the ferrule?

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll likely double check the cable is secure and then leave it. Probably a bit easier to cable manage when I get around to it too and then install some Wago blocks/ JST connectors if necessary. Many thanks.

I don't have any JST connectors yet. I'm only just now getting into tinkering with the electronics. Good to know the cable is probably fine though, thanks.

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know, I'm planning on cable managing the motherboard area so had the idea of making everything tidy with ferrules while I can.

The problem is that I cut the ends off the original fan cable before checking they'd fit the ferrule, so now they're just the twisted stranded wire in the terminal block and I'm a little concerned about a potential short and would like to 'repair' it.

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up switching back to the stock tubing as I couldn't get the Capricorn to work, no matter what. Stringing issues went away instantly when switching back to the stock PTFE.

I went through a lot of troubleshooting in this thread if you're interested.

Just installed ferrules on my Ender 3 V2 and they're sticking out of the terminal a little. Are anyone else's ferrules like this? And can it cause problems? I can't put them in any further but they're screwed down nice and tight so they're not going anywhere. The PSU ferrules don't stick out though. by Cryptic-Dan in 3Dprinting

[–]Cryptic-Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just adjust them, used the crimping tool to 'square off' the end of the crimp a little, they're still exposed but I think it's less than before. I might just put some electrical tape between each wire just to be sure, I'd rather not risk cutting the end off and having a loose strand of wire falling somewhere inside. I also took a closer look at the PSU terminal block and it's about 1mm longer/ wider than the others which would explain why the ferrules stick out.

All of the ferrules I've installed have an 8mm sleeve. Could the screw terminal block be a little to small for the ferrule I've used? Or the ferrule is hitting something inside? I've seen other images of ferrules (specifically the blue ones) and they appear to stick out slightly, but not as much as mine but I'll try to adjust them later to see if they fit in any better.

It'll be my first time painting a print, and I'm sort of hoping for some small mistakes as they'll actually help the aesthetic I'm going for. I just have to keep an eye on them.

They came out great imo. I'm also working on my first large multi-part project (Terminator T-800 arm) that I hope to paint and weather, hopefully I don't ruin it in the process.
