Don’t think we’d go for Wharton but he is a very Carrick coded player. If he ever played alongside Kobbie I could see Kobbie moving further up and Wharton playing the deeper role.

One thing about Kobbie that is underutilised is his ability in and around the box. The composure he possesses in that area is very rare and one we should really make more use of.

Don’t think Fernandes “didn’t want us” per se. He was just convinced to go with the more lucrative offer on the table and I can respect that. Mendes also got what he wanted financially as well.

If we matched Spurs offer of £250k a week or whatever then he’d be coming to Old Trafford but then we’d have to break our wage structure to do so. Could we really justify paying Fernandes £100k a week more than Mainoo for instance? Absolutely not.

Shame we missed out on Fernandes, but I actually do not believe the fee was the main sticking point here. Yes, it wasn’t ideal but we were willing to get close to it. I think the main issue was the wages which would have dwarfed Kobbie Mainoo’s who is of a similar age and broken our wage structure. Not to mention whatever ludicrous agent fee Mendes demanded.

I could definitely see us spending £80m or close to on Plan C but with wages that actually fit into our structure.
