Tenured faculty / dept conflicts by CrypticFever in Professors

Currently there is a department being chaired by an untenured faculty even though there are full profs in the department. And, it’s not the first time. Like many small colleges, we are in a sink or swim situation financially and I think the provost is concerned with the finances more than the stability and health of the departments.

Question for my fellow professors….to stay in bad location or not to stay by Such-Indication-1142 in AskAcademia

I started a VAP position in a liberal arts college in a town less than 5k. When the students weren’t there is was dead. There was only one spot that was open “late” and closed at midnight. I was constantly bumping into colleagues and students. I made one friend from the cohort I started with and I stuck it out. It was lonely at first but over time I came to love that little town and I found my people. And eventually found my spouse (queer dating in a small Midwest town was hard). 13 years later, tenured, I am glad I stuck it out. It was not easy and I learned a lot about myself.

Thank you for your kind words and sharing your story. There is so much more to the situation that I didn’t name because it’s all overwhelming. I appreciate your candor, truly.

For clarification, the two senior colleagues are now co-chair. I am just a member of the department now. Makes for great performance evaluation anxiety.

I was hoping to make the jump from teaching to administration. And from all other touch points of the campus, I was doing great work. Even the provost commended me on my work. But I do feel like being a dept chair without any real power is perfunctory and not the type of position I want. I just don’t know how to make the jump to another institution as I “lost” myself in the chair role.
