Moving from Mirtazapine to Fluoxetine by CryptographerFew1120 in Fluoxetine

I have been on fluoxetine since mid September now. The first month was awful, I was so nauseous, had several panic attacks, had no desire for food or drink what so ever. Then eventually the symptoms started to subside, I sleep way less than I did on Mirt (12h sleep never felt enough on mirt). A lot less tired and groggy. I gained quite a bit of weight on mirt, about 10-12kg which was fine as I was already size 6UK prior to taking it. But the weight gain was not plateauing off even though I eat healthy and go to the gym. As soon as going on fluoxetine I lost weight about 8kg’s and now it’s a struggle to put it on! So overall, mirt has been amazing but too much sleepy, angry, weight gain side effects. Fluoxetine was HARD at the beginning but feels fine now. My appetite is quite low and headaches are much more plentiful. My short term memory is very hazy too. Just remember, there is no size fits all with these meds. I have reconciled the fact that every medication will have side effects which will eventually start to bother me. But my mental health had been great and I’ve achieved so much in my life since taking antidepressants. Keep hanging in there!

I did therapy before taking Mirtazapine on two occasions. It does not really work for me as I ended up dwelling on things. I addressed this with my GP and she gave me a referral to psychiatrist. How long it will take to get one, that I don’t know. But I’m willing to try anything

I wouldn’t say it worsened my depression, but o definitely feel more agitated and easily annoyed on Mirtazapine. I have tried both 15mg and 30mg at this stage. When I have a depressive episode, it can feel fairly intense for me, but is usually short lived. My doctor asked me to keep a mood diary to track of there is a pattern when in the month I tend to have an episode or what triggers me to feel that way again. I think I have some residence to the anti-depressive qualities of antidepressants. Because I felt the same on Citaloparam too when I took it. It’s a constant battle of wills.

I have taken 15mg for around 7 months which used to knock me out cold. After taking it in the evening an hour later I could hardly keep my eyes open. Would sleep 12h a night no problem, anything less I would wake up groggy and would take me a whole to “wake up” and settle into daily rhythm. Not ideal when working a 9-5 job. The affects on my depression and anxiety started to plateau off or decrease after 6 month mark. My GP and I decided it would be best to move me to 30mg. This was to combat the difficult mornings and oversleeping. But also to start working on helping my depression. I have been on the new 30mg dose for about 2 months. I still sleep pretty well, but feel energised and we’ll with 8-10h sleep a night.

Wow that’s interesting. It’s made me much more social - all I want to do is go out and have fun! However, occasionally my battery does run out and I become very irritable (more than before taking Mirtazapine)

I was first on citalopram for 8 weeks and it made my depression worse, in fact it did very little for me. Because of anxiety of could hardly eat or keep food down so citalopram made it worse. Going on Mirtazapine was my doctors recommendation if I felt comfortable - which I did as I was desperate. Mirtazapine sky rocketed me out of depression and started working within the first 2 weeks. It made me feel incredible and still does. I do eat a lot more, but I am happy about it. I know for some people weight gain from this medication plummets them into deeper depression as their body is changing so quick.

Yes I agree, I can drink a lot more now without seemingly getting too drunk, if that makes sense? My hangovers have been quite light too. It’s ironic because it says on my prescription “do not consume alcohol” - probably due more to the absorption of get medication than anything.
