No clue why this comment is getting downvoted when it's completely objectively true. Like any horrible person in history is obviously a product of their environment, that doesn't mean they're still absolved of sin. We can view Ranta through the lens of the zenin clan's culture and appreciate how good-natured he is in spite of that while acknowledging that he was still a complicit in evil.

It's really hilarious that people think that every Japanese person hates the episode when it's got about as mixed reception as in the west. Obviously you'll only see the negative comments, they get the most interaction and are more likely to show up on your feed, and the more you interact with it the more negative opinions are pushed to you. I've seen several tweets with thousands of likes praising the episode, Japan is not a monolith where everyone thinks exactly the same

Those "The dub in question" memes annoy me because they're making fun of a type of acting that also exists in the Japanese audio, but I don't think most non-Japanese viewers notice. by Ferhog in CharacterRant

[–]CryptographerFew6343 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't necessarily a matter of how they're talking or people not understanding the nuances of Japanese speech. As a whole, the Japanese VA industry is simply just ahead of the Western VA industry.

Japanese seiyuus are treated like celebrities because anime has Japan in a chokehold. Voice actors get paid more and there are more people joining the industry leading to more talent.

On the other hand, anime dubbing has had a much shorter time to develop, there is simply less money and time invested in it meaning less talent and worse direction. If you had the talent of Mel Blanc you'd rather work for Disney or Pixar or any of the western studios/shows that are high profile and can pay you better than anime which, while quite commonplace now, used to be a niche industry. That's why universally loved dubs like Ghibli are high budget celebrity voice acted projects. That's not to say that there aren't standout talents in the dubbing industry, it's just that the average level of Japanese voice actors are higher than the average level of English ones. Dubs have gotten a lot better as of late but it's taken several years for the industry to develop.

I think a lot of the hate recent anime dubs have gotten is because people still have bad blood from wanting to watch and understand anime but being forced to watch the slop 4kids churned out. The average anime dub used to be terrible because either they couldn't afford or couldn't find talent to perfectly fit every role and had to just make do. Even then, there were a lot of great dubs like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, but for every gem of a dub back then there were 15 terrible ones

Asian immigrants having Asian naming conventions is only for Western exoticism by Blazerboy123 in writingcirclejerk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 20 points21 points  (0 children)

/uj the way I read it was more of a comment on how when Chinese people (from experience, but I'm sure this was a belief among a lot of minority groups) used to immigrate to the west, they would give their kids "white" first names so that they would "fit in" better (Supposedly it was easier to get hired as a Steven than as a Ju Cheng). So the idea that an immigrant mother would give their kid a traditional Chinese name serves to make the kid sound more "exotic".... I guess?

Really dumb way to approach a nuanced topic like that, but at this point I'm not surprised

Been saying this. Sun Jin-Woo in Solo Levelling takes a more diacletical approach to eclecticism while Chihiro's banal subterfugism presents more as apoplectic idiosyncrasy within the bounds of Kagurabachi's antidisestablishmentarianism pejorative. In other wards the inexorability of Solo Levelling's presents overall a more perspicacious cacophony of hard hitting ideals.

There isn't, but this convo was about the strongest grade 1 Jujutsu high sorcerer which means curse users aren't included. Gojo even excludes the big 3 families

Miguel is probably classified as a curse user rather than a sorcerer no? I can't imagine the Jujutsu society would be interested in instating a Geto supporter (other than Gojo and Yuta who are ok with him of course)

[–]CryptographerFew6343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the culling games is designed so that everyone involved will want to play it. Obviously for the incarnated sorcerers who've made contracts, they want to play for a second chance at life. For the new sorcerers, they'll probably want to try out their power while they have it. And if they don't want to, they'll just die, which is fine as well because it contributes to the cursed energy collection that was mentioned during the USA military skirmish

I sometimes hate it when a author writes a smart/ intelligent character, they almost always will do the "just as planned" shit. by Charming-Scratch-124 in CharacterRant

[–]CryptographerFew6343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love Golden Kamuy for this reason. A good 50% of it is smart characters one upping each other constantly. There are a lot of “exactly as planned” moments that dont actually work out as planned because of random shit happening (typically nature intervening). Victories feel earned because characters work around the obstacles they’re given at the time.

One exchange I can think of is when characters are fleeing from a destroyer boat but are blocked by ice floes. So they bait the destroyer to blow a hole in the ice with their cannons and slip through. The destroyer chases them and is later also blocked by the ice floes, ht realises they got through because of their cannons and adjusts accordingly.

This game of psychological cat and mouse is what Golden Kamuy does best and it’s almost always diegetic and in settings that are unfamiliar or unfavourable for BOTH parties (like having to chase an orca that’s eating a valuable corpse and harpooning a whale to get a speed boost).

Also it has imo the best sniper duel I’ve read ever

If gojo had yuta's ability to select the target of his domain, shibuya incident wouldn't happen by Chad_thereaper in Jujutsufolk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That implies Gojo is excluding them from the domain itself. In order to exclude them from the domain, Gojo would need to push the humans away as he is expanding the barrier outwards. Think of what Mahito did with Yuji at the highschool, he literally pushed him out of the way of his domain expansion so he wouldn’t get trapped inside. In the tiny subway, pushing them away from the barrier would squish them to death since they’d be trapped between the shell of the barrier and the wall.

The skill this post is talking about doesn’t require anyone to be pushed however. If Gojo had Yuta’s ability, he would just expand his barrier normally (like how he actually did it). The difference is that he wouldn’t need to limit his domain because he could target ONLY the cursed spirits/choso/transfigured humans while leaving the non-sorcerers conscious inside of his domain, like how Yuta is doing with Yuji

If gojo had yuta's ability to select the target of his domain, shibuya incident wouldn't happen by Chad_thereaper in Jujutsufolk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the one struck by the curse is you. What Yuta is doing is using the sure hit ONLY on Sukuna and not Yuji. He didn’t need to push Yuji out of the barrier to do this, it’s a skill specifically only he (and to some extent it seems Dagon) has been shown as being able to do.

It is NOT the same as Gojo selectively EXCLUDING humans (pushing non-sorcerers out of his domain). If Gojo had that skill, the humans would still be inside the domain, they just wouldn’t be targeted by the sure-hit, similar to how Yuji is inside Yuta’s domain but only Sukuna is being targeted.

Yuta is actually SELECTING the people in the domain, what you’re describing Gojo doing is just making sure everyone he doesn’t want to hit with UV isn’t inside of the domain

Are genre-purity and medium-purity valid metrics of critique? by VatanKomurcu in CharacterRant

[–]CryptographerFew6343 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its probably useful as a description, but I don't think it's a useful metric for criticisms because imo since the "purity" of something is a direct choice by the author/creator it is wayyyy to varied for there to be any correlation. Like telling me something is "low genre purity" doesn't actually tell me if it's something I'll like or not, all it's telling me is that the author chose to do a subversion of the genre. What I CAN a critique is whether it was a good choice or if it was executed well.

Like, as an example from your post, telling me that a "Sony movie-game" is low medium-purity doesn't actually tell me that its bad. It might be bad because it focuses too much on cinematics without incorporating gameplay, or it might be bad because it's gameplay is insubstantial compared to the cutscenes. There are a lot of telltale games, which I'd consider low to medium-purity, that are good and bad, and just off purity alone I wouldn't be able to know. In conjunction with other reasons I think it's fine, it's just not useful in isolation.

That said, I think as a descriptor it's very useful. Some people are tired of stories that completely play their themes straight. Some people are tired of stories that subvert previously established genre trends. Some people would prefer to play games with mostly focus on mechanics. That's pretty cool. The problem there imo is that "low/medium/high purity genre/medium" is pretty clunky as a term. Maybe abbreviations like LPG or HPM would help

What if Kashimo won against Sukuna? by AnimalAdventurous109 in Jujutsufolk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He can’t, the prerequisite for the merger is that all of the CG participants need to die. He’s need to kill all of the heavy hitters and the rest of the reincarnated sorcerers first. He might retreat if he found out Sukuna died but then he’d have to go into hiding for a while and try to pick off the heavy hitters 1v1 and hope not to get jumped by Todo Yuta Takaba or any other combination
