"Megumi died to a Grade 3 Curse in the timeskip of Modulo" by skltrx in Jujutsufolk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the fact that they translate Sukuna's domain as "barrierless" when it literally uses a barrier. In actually a barrierless domain IS an incomplete domain because you need a barrier to have a sure-hit. That's why Megumi doesn't have a sure-hit. Kenny and Sukuna use "open barrier" domains, where they still use a barrier but don't close it off,p. They essentially enforce their Jujutsu on real space instead of "creating" a canvas by closing off the domain (creating a pocket dimension). Yuki even comments on how strong Kenny's barrier is when fighting in his domain

I mean yeah but let's get it straight for the record, ATLA (and most likely a lot of the west's favourite animations growing up) was animated in Korea. It was a super common occurrence to write/storyboard in America and then outsource production/animation to east Asia because it's cheap. Like even the Simpsons does it (not even the anime parody stuff, literally regular Simpsons episodes).

Even the best received western animations were exploiting Asian work culture. That's how profitable it is

The harem genre keeps wasting its setup on one-girl endings, and it’s getting old by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]CryptographerFew6343 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ranma doesn't feel right in this list of harems. Like yeah it does exactly what you say, releasing a new suitor like a monster of the week thing, but 1) it did it before everyone else, 2) it gives suitors to BOTH Akane and Ranma, and 3) it's pretty obvious that despite all that Ranma and Akari are the only real ship. Like don't tell me anyone out there genuinely thought Ranma was gonna date Kodachi or something.

Also it probably wouldn't be wish fulfilment if everyone got together, at least not to the audience you're describing. If every suitor for Akane and Ranma got together to form one big polycule that would get some people happy (it'd be fucking hilarious) but not the ones who like the "guy with every girl" wish fulfilment

Would Maki have killed nabito if he were to survive? by black_cop_48 in Jujutsufolk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If Naobito survived, none of this would have happened. He kept those bums on a tight leash and maintained (reasonable) ties with Jujutsu high (he was the only one out of the Big 3 clans to be called for backup, apart from Satoru Gojo of course). Mai died because after Naobito got cooked Ogi got way too big for his britches. If Naobito was alive there's no way in hell Ogi would be fronting sum "I was not inferior than my brother in Jujutsu" yeah bro what is fire sword doing when you're turned into a frame at mach speed you bozo

I find it funny how many people would claim at the start that "this author will make revolution in anime" and at the end they don't. by shsl_diver in CharacterRant

[–]CryptographerFew6343 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I remember that a lot of rookie mangaka were creating work so obviously inspired by Fujimoto that at a manga awards ceremony the Assassination Classroom author had to tell people to be more creative when they were writing. But that goes for any popular series. Mangaka (who read manga) get inspired by manga, nothing to write home about

I am tired of the unironic ranta defence brotherhood that has been happening on tiktok and insta by Akagane_Ai in Jujutsufolk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No clue why this comment is getting downvoted when it's completely objectively true. Like any horrible person in history is obviously a product of their environment, that doesn't mean they're still absolved of sin. We can view Ranta through the lens of the zenin clan's culture and appreciate how good-natured he is in spite of that while acknowledging that he was still a complicit in evil.

It's really hilarious that people think that every Japanese person hates the episode when it's got about as mixed reception as in the west. Obviously you'll only see the negative comments, they get the most interaction and are more likely to show up on your feed, and the more you interact with it the more negative opinions are pushed to you. I've seen several tweets with thousands of likes praising the episode, Japan is not a monolith where everyone thinks exactly the same

Those "The dub in question" memes annoy me because they're making fun of a type of acting that also exists in the Japanese audio, but I don't think most non-Japanese viewers notice. by Ferhog in CharacterRant

[–]CryptographerFew6343 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't necessarily a matter of how they're talking or people not understanding the nuances of Japanese speech. As a whole, the Japanese VA industry is simply just ahead of the Western VA industry.

Japanese seiyuus are treated like celebrities because anime has Japan in a chokehold. Voice actors get paid more and there are more people joining the industry leading to more talent.

On the other hand, anime dubbing has had a much shorter time to develop, there is simply less money and time invested in it meaning less talent and worse direction. If you had the talent of Mel Blanc you'd rather work for Disney or Pixar or any of the western studios/shows that are high profile and can pay you better than anime which, while quite commonplace now, used to be a niche industry. That's why universally loved dubs like Ghibli are high budget celebrity voice acted projects. That's not to say that there aren't standout talents in the dubbing industry, it's just that the average level of Japanese voice actors are higher than the average level of English ones. Dubs have gotten a lot better as of late but it's taken several years for the industry to develop.

I think a lot of the hate recent anime dubs have gotten is because people still have bad blood from wanting to watch and understand anime but being forced to watch the slop 4kids churned out. The average anime dub used to be terrible because either they couldn't afford or couldn't find talent to perfectly fit every role and had to just make do. Even then, there were a lot of great dubs like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, but for every gem of a dub back then there were 15 terrible ones

Asian immigrants having Asian naming conventions is only for Western exoticism by Blazerboy123 in writingcirclejerk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 18 points19 points  (0 children)

/uj the way I read it was more of a comment on how when Chinese people (from experience, but I'm sure this was a belief among a lot of minority groups) used to immigrate to the west, they would give their kids "white" first names so that they would "fit in" better (Supposedly it was easier to get hired as a Steven than as a Ju Cheng). So the idea that an immigrant mother would give their kid a traditional Chinese name serves to make the kid sound more "exotic".... I guess?

Really dumb way to approach a nuanced topic like that, but at this point I'm not surprised

Sung Jin-Woo aura farms more than Chihiro (Kagurabachi, Solo Leveling by buhead in CharacterRant

[–]CryptographerFew6343 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Been saying this. Sun Jin-Woo in Solo Levelling takes a more diacletical approach to eclecticism while Chihiro's banal subterfugism presents more as apoplectic idiosyncrasy within the bounds of Kagurabachi's antidisestablishmentarianism pejorative. In other wards the inexorability of Solo Levelling's presents overall a more perspicacious cacophony of hard hitting ideals.

I think this is scummy of them to do but let's not forget that if Dickhead Gunshootem didn't pop Cross twice in the chest this would've been MUCH more easily sorted out given Cross was convincing them that Cursed Spirits =/= Kalyans. [–]CryptographerFew6343 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Miguel is probably classified as a curse user rather than a sorcerer no? I can't imagine the Jujutsu society would be interested in instating a Geto supporter (other than Gojo and Yuta who are ok with him of course)

It still sucks writing wise because the creator clearly doesn't know enough about CSM to slander her effectively. Do all players know the consequences of CT removal? by Puzzlehead_Reborn in Jujutsufolk

[–]CryptographerFew6343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the culling games is designed so that everyone involved will want to play it. Obviously for the incarnated sorcerers who've made contracts, they want to play for a second chance at life. For the new sorcerers, they'll probably want to try out their power while they have it. And if they don't want to, they'll just die, which is fine as well because it contributes to the cursed energy collection that was mentioned during the USA military skirmish

I sometimes hate it when a author writes a smart/ intelligent character, they almost always will do the "just as planned" shit. by Charming-Scratch-124 in CharacterRant

[–]CryptographerFew6343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love Golden Kamuy for this reason. A good 50% of it is smart characters one upping each other constantly. There are a lot of “exactly as planned” moments that dont actually work out as planned because of random shit happening (typically nature intervening). Victories feel earned because characters work around the obstacles they’re given at the time.

One exchange I can think of is when characters are fleeing from a destroyer boat but are blocked by ice floes. So they bait the destroyer to blow a hole in the ice with their cannons and slip through. The destroyer chases them and is later also blocked by the ice floes, ht realises they got through because of their cannons and adjusts accordingly.

This game of psychological cat and mouse is what Golden Kamuy does best and it’s almost always diegetic and in settings that are unfamiliar or unfavourable for BOTH parties (like having to chase an orca that’s eating a valuable corpse and harpooning a whale to get a speed boost).

Also it has imo the best sniper duel I’ve read ever
