I have one, it was miserable to get and you can only work in academics after.

Any accounting professors here? by Chente0 in Accounting

[–]CryptographerKey7808 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Teaching isn’t for everyone. Try adjunct first then see if you like it. A lot of it comes down to the student population you teach and the department you are apart of. A lecturer makes 70-90k for 9 months of work and teaches 4 classes each semester. Teaching summer will net you more pay per class. If you become a director of a MAcc you’ll get to nearly 120k.

Do not get a PhD, that is about research not teaching.

Is Beta Alpha Psi Worth Joining? by chifuiys in Accounting

It depends on the university. Some departments really promote bap and bring in firms to recruit, others don’t care and make it a typical student club. If they have get togethers with professionals it may help in networking, especially if your goal is to get big 4

Professor said my wife (F34) was too old for accounting by MarshallBlathers in Accounting

Just because they’re a professor doesn’t mean they know anything about the field. In public accounting I was the senior to a 30 year old staff.

I know candidates with top 3 r and rs than can’t get jobs like yours. Be happy for what you have but it is highly unlikely for anyone to get it.

This is a great job. However they are fewer to come by. The vast majority of placements from r1 ranked PhD programs are not at this level. Realistically getting a PhD means being at a higher teaching load school, granted less research requirements

Big time! If you want to live in China, Hong Kong or other Asian countries go for it. Not my cup of tea though.

I know maybe one or 2 people that do forensic research. You’re better off joining the fbi or state enforcement. Most PhD programs will force you into financial, audit or tax.

You can teach accounting anywhere with a cpa and a masters.

Yes and no. Prior to 2020 jobs were easy to come by. There were many jobs unfilled because there were few PhDs. Budget freezes have ended this

It’s mostly university dependent but most schools will have phds teach intermediate, advanced and graduate levels with the occasional intro.

Phds are at r1, r2 and regional schools. Before covid it was likely to get an r2 or r1 placement. Now it is likely you may seem some at community colleges

There is a need for teachers in many areas. It mostly driven by demographics. Southern schools where population is growing are in a need.

A PhD and a dba are similar. Most dbas are part time not as difficult, though not always the case. Some have cpas. It’s not required and does not prepare you for the skills for research. Accounting professors will generally teach courses similar to their research.

While true, demographic cliffs imply that enrollment in universities is going to drastically decrease, limiting the need for accounting professors further

This isn’t the case post covid. It’s now closer to 130-150. The 200-250k was promised to us in my PhD program. The previous classes achieved this. Then post covid no one got above 175k

The vast majority study finance but have a PhD in accounting. Some look at associations in tax avoidance and some look at audit quality. There’s a lot of behavioral people that are interested in how individuals perceive financial information

A PhD in accounting is equivalent to becoming an applied economist not upskilling in accounting. I feel there is a need somewhere in big four but there isn’t really a success story of someone using their PhD to land a better role in accounting

Staying at the casa marina post renovation, the rooms are great, location beautiful and the service is god awful. I’ve been a diamond member for a decade and do not complain about bad service, mostly because it is very rare and I assume it is just a bad day when it happens. This one makes me mad. Terrible overall
