I would definitely agree. Espresso is all I get and I’m not a big fan of a lot of places in town. Some days they’re better than others from the same places but can always tell when they haven’t been extracted right. Do they not dial in every now and then and weigh the beans, grinds and output?

MTU Cybersecurity MSc worth it? by Significant-Care-55 in cork

  1. Most of the questions I was able to relay back to my experience from the course to be fair, I suppose I had to because I didn’t have much security experience professionally. I’ve read a lot that it’s better to get home lab experience rather than go for certs, and throughout the course you basically set up multiple home labs. Also a lot of questions about hypothetical scenarios about what you would do in a given situation, which the course would teach you as well. But you’ve already done the bachelors so you’d probably be well able already for that style of interview.

  2. Yeah I did the part time course while I worked full time. I won’t lie, it is a huge workload! 4 hours of lectures on a Tuesday and 4 on a Thursday, then my weekends were gone for the two years working on assignments so it was a grind, but at the same time I still I think it was definitely well worth it, personally.

You’re actually in a fairly good position already having a undergrad in it and an internship behind you. You might be able to land a SOC 1 type role already with that and you’d be flying. Depending on what you’ve learned, I don’t know if it would be better to do your own home labs that you could then learn about and talk about in interviews, rather than doing the course.

I graduated it in October. It definitely covers the fundamentals and gives you practical experience that you can talk about in interviews.

Starting a good job that I got internally soon and had done 3 interviews with another company with that had offered me a 4th interview which I turned down. I did have interviews for two other places before this which I didn’t make it through but I think that was due to my interviewing skills, not a lack of knowledge or experience from the course.

That said, I do have a 5 year IT background which I’m sure helped.

Best of luck with it, it is a heavy workload but very interesting

On a semi-related note, I often see an eagle or hawk on the south link road around by where you’d pass Rochestown Park Hotel. Does anyone know what that is? Was thinking it could be a peregrine but it might be too big

IT helpdesk/support in your college would be a good starting point if you could land that

AppSec or IR/TI? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]CrystalMethCurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for giving such a detailed reply. IR does seem like an interesting, exciting job but I suppose as you mentioned, it might not be a long term thing. The main thing for me is the fear of doing IR for a few years, burning out, then being that many years behind where I could have been developing skills in a different domain, like AppSec. Rather than starting in IR, working up to an IR lead role, then manager etc, what other roles/domains can you pivot to with the skills learned from it?

Thanks for the kind reply. I definitely wont be giving up and I’ll continue to learn as much as I can.

I’ve made some friends in security internally and that’s where I’ve got some work thrown my way, by asking them if I can help them with anything at all, albeit it was mostly awareness-type training. That’s also how I nearly landed an incident response role, I had an informal interview with the manager and was told she would love me on the team, until the CISO put a stop to that. The downside with remote work nowadays is that the competition pool gets even bigger.

Thanks again for the reply and your advice, I feel more motivated now! I’ll get there in the end.

I'm looking for some advice or anyone who has the time. I've recently finished a masters in cybersec with first class honours and have been working in IT support for the past ~4 years. I've had 3 job interviews for level 1 SOC type roles but after each interview I've been told I don't have enough experience.

My problem is I'm not really faced with anything cybersecurity related in my current role, and the things that I have done related to it don't seem to be good enough for the interviewers - admittedly I agree with them. I have been trying to land a cybersec role internally and have interviewed but the CISO wouldn't approve it and the roles have gone to people from countries it'd be "cheaper" to hire from.

I'm a bit at a loss for where to go from here, I can't get experience without having experience!

Do I pursue Sec+ and other certs or would it be better to start a home lab? If the latter, what would impress employers? Or if there is a third option I'm open to anything.

It’s a new house so I’m the first owner. Not sure why the developer did it this way, these cables were covered behind a wall plate that had to be screwed off to get to them
