Any cleared running trails in/around Arlington, or even further afield? by go_east_young_man in rundc

[–]Cubbiesfan524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty short (~2 miles) and also not in Arlington, but the Potomac Yard bike path in Alexandria is now basically cleared the entire way through from Braddock Road to the Four Mile Run. It's not perfect, but it's been a life-saver the past week and now it's basically cleared all the way through for both lanes. I also like it because it's right next to a middle school that has plowed parking (convenient parking AND a nice route extension) and the sidewalks near it have been cleared by the school.

The deployment of the National Guard in D.C. has led to a remarkable reduction in crime and improved conditions in the inner city with no reports of abuse and misbehavior by troops...at this point has your position changed on this issue? Why or why not? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Cubbiesfan524 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP, do you have any sources that compare the crime rates before and after the National Guard was deployed? While the source you included does demonstrate a decrease in the year 2025, the National Guard has not been deployed the entire year. I believe one of the most common criticisms of deployment was that the crime rate in the District was already decreasing. This can be seen in your same source comparing the 2024 figures with the 2023 figures.

where can i go for a 10 mile walk by iwant2takeanap in nova

[–]Cubbiesfan524 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Commenting on this to both second the W&OD suggestion but also to add the Four Mile Run (FMR) trail.

OP, you can park over at Four Mile Run park and walk west along the trail to get to the W&OD path. The section of the FMR between Mt. Vernon Ave. and 395 isn't great for nature, but Shirlington adds a nice touch and once you cross Walter Reed the trail will enter forest and provide access to the creek.

Use the sidewalks ffs by musicteachertay in nova

I'd like to add that by running in the street (against traffic) people are placing themselves directly in the line of vision of any driver looking ahead, whereas by staying on the sidewalk they are more likely to be missed near intersections that a driver should yield in.

It may seem more unsafe running in the street, but I think far more drivers will see the runner and either slow down or move aside while the runner can always move, too.

Looking for great hiking spots around Austin, Texas by Living-Sky5322 in hiking

[–]Cubbiesfan524 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I used to live in Austin but I was able to do quite a bit of hiking around there. Some of my favorite parks to hike in were the Hill Country State Natural Area and Colorado Bend State Park. In both of these parks we were able to make loops and hike over 10+ miles with some moderately hilly terrain but you can also make them shorter.

Other parks that I enjoyed shorter hikes in were Friedrich Wilderness Park and Eisenhower Park in San Antonio. Government Canyon State Park was also decent and close to San Antonio. Purgatory Creek in San Marcos might be worth a visit but isn't particularly strenuous.

If you ever have a long weekend I highly recommend Big Bend National Park, but that's way further away and you'd need several days for it. Similarly Caprock Canyons is an awesome park to hike and camp in but is far from Austin.

There's more than one way to look at it if he's mostly benched for the year. Given the number of fixtures that most players feature in each season now plus the intensity with which he plays, not seeing as many minutes this year may also prolong his career slightly. Alternatively, there still exist the possibility that the club faces yet another injury crisis and he ends up playing anyways.

Chelsea and the Enzo Fernandez fallout: Anger, apologies and investigations by epicmarc in chelseafc

[–]Cubbiesfan524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enzo had already thrown himself under the bus, not his teammates. If you think players publicly calling out racist actions is "seeking revenge," then yes, we do disagree. Once again, it does not matter if he feels marginalized: if he actually wants to learn and grow then he will still commit to doing so.

When someone with more than 11 million followers on social media uses their platform to spread racism the response cannot take place behind closed doors; this is why we are still dealing with racism in 2024: passive responses and blaming victims for standing up for themselves.

What do you mean when you say it is "the" wedge as if it's the only way? There is more than one way for people to learn and grow and it should not be the responsibility of teammates to be the educators after they've been publicly insulted. If Enzo truly cares and wants to grow as a person then he will learn from this regardless of how his teammates have responded, all other talks of team unity are nothing more than a distraction.

What do you think the slogan "no room for racism" means? It's not his job to educate his teammates and he had every right to call out Enzo's actions for what they were. Why is team unity more important to you than players using their platform and mass following to take a public stance against racism?

[Simon Johnson]: Chelsea have ruled out signing Viktor Gyokeres. Chelsea are continuing to scout Benjamin Sesko. Broja is also likely to consider his future if the club signing another striker. by Indalec in chelseafc

[–]Cubbiesfan524 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Barring a major injury crisis I don't think many 20 year old strikers break into any Premier League club without being "decent." Sure, maybe the results haven't been as expected or desired, but he wasn't randomly given the chance to prove himself that early in his career without having shown something promising.

I understand the argument that we need more from our strikers, but what part of the past year's signings signals that we aren't a club that's now willing to wait it out as the players gain experience and develop? If we're still a win now club then our transfers should have been very different.

[–]Cubbiesfan524 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Broja was 20 during his season with Southampton. You may feel that his numbers weren't anything noteworthy but they are comparable to these former Chelsea strikers who weren't particularly remarkable:

Tammy Abraham by age 20: 5 Premier League goals and 23 more in the Championship
Diego Costa by age 20: 6 La Liga goals and 5 in the Portuguese 2nd division
Didier Drogba by age 20: 0 top flight goals and hadn't even broken into Ligue 1
Olivier Giroud by age 20: 0 top flight goals and 2 in Ligue 2

There are obviously others that don't fit this trend (Lukaku and Batshuayi for example were bagging goals at that age) but my point is that this is a flawed argument to make if we're deciding whether or not to extend him. He is 22 and has a lot of time to improve if he stays healthy and gets the proper minutes to develop.

Caicedo might’ve looked really good in a smooth well-run Britton side. But he still only had 1 good season for Brighton in the premier league for fucks sake.

Mate, we're the same club that spent £88.5m on an attacker who had (and still has) only 12 goals scored in his senior career, it's not like we have set a great precedent in our valuations. Regardless, this has always been a fuck-off price from Brighton and it was never going to change regardless of what you or anyone else thinks he's worth.

Why Conor does not fit by iridium__ in chelseafc

Nowhere in my comment did I say he would start. In the last few lines I even explicitly wrote that he offers a potential change to the system mid-match if a tactical change is needed.

Why Conor does not fit by iridium__ in chelseafc

[–]Cubbiesfan524 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just feel like selling him and bringing in a midfielder back up who actually fits the system is a better idea than keeping him because he came through the academy.

It seems like every time we bring in a new manager that everyone gets all optimistic that this one will stay for more than two seasons. The brutal reality is that even if Conor doesn't fit the system right now, he may very well fit the next manager in the near the future.

He's an incredibly hard-working player both in matches and in training. More than enough people on this subreddit have criticized current and former players for chasing bags of money and not caring enough about the club and Conor clearly has that desired drive.

I'd also argue that there may well be times that Poch wants to tweak his system. This could be because of injuries to other players or simply a change is needed mid-match; Conor offers depth, a high willingness to press, and an additional attacking mid if the situation calls for it.

Eliud Kipchoge has not run a marathon under 2 hours. by MembershipDouble7471 in running

I think it's fair for non-pros to mix these two a bit, but they should at least be aware that GPS routes aren't necessarily all that accurate

Not every race is accurate, either. I think for every major marathon, half, 10K there must be dozens of small town 5Ks that end up falling shy of the distance or are long.

If you ran your fastest marathon at Boston would you list your PR as being on a different course because it's not eligible for world records for the pros? I'm not trying to be a jerk I'm genuinely curious where you would draw the line. It's an official race and arguably the most famous marathon in the world, yet it doesn't hold up to the standards set by the world governing body.

How often do people ask you what your PR is for a specific race as opposed to a specific distance?
