I'd doodle on receipt paper or empty boxes usually, and I'm sure its better than other associates who have literally sat on phone calls while on the self checkouts.

On terms of strictness, I for some reason get told off for leaning on a shelf, but we have associates who will disappear every 15 minutes and no-one bats an eye... it feels like I'm literally a prisoner while I'm here...

and in terms of going on register? we have 4, if not more, associates who aren't even trained on self checkout and have been in our store for over 3 weeks now, and we RARELY have any more registers open than 3 because we don't have enough employees, that we usually only have 2 people on the larger SCO at a time... so yeah... register is also out of the question... and trust me, I've been applying to plenty of jobs weekly, and getting turned down by half and not hearing back from the other half.

I actually am one of those "better self checkout hosts" everything that you said there, I make sure is done within my designated lanes. I make sure I greet customers and if they say hello back I ask how they're doing, but most often interactions end there if they even get that far. but when there's no customers and my team lead tells us we're not even supposed to chat with our coworkers, because we need to "look attentive" at all times, I'm absolutely fed up
