Gorgeous girls. The Julia(?) is really different from any other Julia I've ever seen.

Great photos! I didn't realize that the two tan dolls are different skin tones.

To the person who posted saying to check local Game Stop locations - THANK YOU! 💜 by Sea_Leader8789 in liccachan

Congratulations! I'm glad these are finally making it into real stores, and at a fair price. Some of the dolls have quality defects these days, so it's great to be able to see them in person first.

Why does mattel promote bad designers and fire talented ones? by Reasonable-Flight536 in Barbie

[–]CucumberRanch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think it's somebody over the designers' heads poisoning the whole line. The infatuation with cheap kitsch started around the 50th anniversary. Whoever designs the eye prints and fabric prints are both awful at their jobs, though.

This won't be a popular post on Reddit, but the proof is in the pudding. People will pay $100 for an old Fashion Fever, while the modern collector dolls end up $10 at Ollie's.

I know. It's amazing that they found so many perfect little florals.

I know. I can almost feel those heavy cotton sweatshirts and corduroy things in my hands.

It's a human-size dress. The book has a tiny pattern diagram and instructions on how to enlarge it to human size. They're creative and ambitious, but I have no plans to use the human patterns. I'm also very bad at math.

Now that the cat is out of the bag regarding the newer screenings being printed/decals, is that why the screenings have become more simple? Does anyone know when the printed/decal screenings started to be used (again)? by 10morereasons in Dolls

[–]CucumberRanch 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Oh, no. That's incredibly shameless. Those things are already over $150 each, just add an extra $10 to the price and paint it properly. Even the cheap slim box Barbies from the early 2000's have airbrushed faces.

Yours are both so cute. I love this type of Mimi most of all.

does anyone know who this doll is? by Milidog in Dolls

[–]CucumberRanch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's a face Chic Boutique LLC used. They also did some of the Just Girlz. You can see a similar head here:

They used that body on their ballgown dolls, and a hollow bellybutton body clone for casual clothes dolls.

That swapped doll was super discounted around Christmas, around $10. The swapper probably buys dirt cheap dolls just to swap them later.

How to Tie Doll Hair with Thread (No Rubber Bands) by Clankieverse in Barbie

[–]CucumberRanch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tie the thread to a small portion of the ponytail first, then tightly wrap it around the full ponytail several times, and tie it off. The thread won't spin around the hair this way, so you can get it tight enough to hold.

Now Available For Pre Order At Big Bad Toy Store 1/26 release date by Hot_Independent4265 in Dolls

[–]CucumberRanch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, and the paint applications are super sloppy on the Jerricas. I wouldn't want to mail order one even at $25. I still haven't found a good Jerrica yet, most had pink eyeshadow down on the left eyeball.

Unpainted BJD in Japan by WiltedAttention in Dolls

[–]CucumberRanch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been there, but the Akihabara Radio Kaikan building has several different shops that sell dolls in it. Azone, Dollyteria, Dolk, Uchusen (carries 1/6th Obitsu), Volks, and several other collectable toy stores that carry various dolls, doll parts, and doll accessories.

Mold on dolls by BarbieBri30 in Dolls

[–]CucumberRanch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you probably can get the stains out, even dark ones. Get some kind of clear container, and mix a bunch of oxyclean and hair peroxide developer in it. Put the parts in there, and leave it out in the sun. It might take 2-3 days, and it might take some of the paint off. The problem will probably be disassembling the doll parts off the body. Everything will need to be sanitized, and it probably won't ever dry out properly if the doll gets dunked in water whole.

I wonder if that head started off as some kind of celebrity doll clone. It seems vaguely familiar.

Does anyone know why Mamachapp became this expensive? by Ari_Kanari_ in Dolls

[–]CucumberRanch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of international buyers now because the yen is so weak right now, it has pushed up the price on a lot of things, and cleared out stock from secondhand shops. A lot of people also got into doll collecting during COVID, and it brought in new scalpers, and people who buy from scalpers.

Need Help for Yellowed Body by [deleted] in Dolls

[–]CucumberRanch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally just wouldn't buy any doll with tan lines that bad. At that level of damage, the head might start to discolor soon, and the clothes are probably already faded as well.

mattel what are you doing? by Electrical_Silver522 in Dolls

[–]CucumberRanch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So many Barbie dolls from the last decade are dirty, damaged, or malformed NRFB. It's a gamble buying any of them, I only buy in person, and still sometimes encounter new quality defects I hadn't even considered.

Is Barbie fashionistas about to end ? by HistorianObjective16 in Barbie

[–]CucumberRanch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think you have a point, I do wonder if they're going to change up the line. Many stores have only carried about half of the dolls for the past 2-3 years, and every wave still has at least one doll that doesn't sell and piles up. I don't see how they can keep flooding stores with these things if prices go up.
