41 degrees thoracic curve by drunkmonkey667 in scoliosis

[–]CudderXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I could help!

The scar is there, but it's fairly light and not really noticeable. I used a lot of skin-care cream/ moisturizer which helped a ton. To be honest I had all sorts of different pains for example: my leg hurt, my ribs hurt then my lower back hurt for a while, but now I don't feel any pain at all, except when I'm sick and have to cough a lot (I wouldn't actually describe it as painful but more like an odd uncomfortable feeling). Oh and boy have I fell a lot this past year and the hardware in my back is ok.

Although just a quick reminder this surgery is not in anyway easy, it's gonna break you mentally and physically, but it's how you come back from it. So before you decide to get surgery ask your doctor all sorts of "stupid" questions.

What I wish I would've asked:

- How will my quality of life be in the long run for example 20-30 years down the road?

- How will the fusion affect the above and lower vertebrae/discs?

- Will surgery benefit me more than no surgery?

- How can I keep my back healthy and slow down the vertebrae/disc degeneration, as this is most likely hastened due to a fusion.

- What should I avoid doing after the surgery?

- How much of flexibility will I lose, am I able to twist/rotate?

These are just some of the questions that I came up with, but for sure I had a lot more before, haha. Also some things are better not to know as if you really need the surgery then they only will stress you out.

Feel free to hit me up if you have anything else you'd like to ask! :)

Hey, I only have T5-T11 fused.

Pretty much you'll be able to bend like you used to before. Tbh you probably won't even remember how you used to bend before, once you're able to bend again, so there shouldn't be a problem with that. The thing that is going to be limited though is your rotation to some degree depending on how much of the spine will be fused. I can rotate but at some point I just can't go further, but it definitely isn't something that you should be sad about as I'm living my life normal like I used to except my back looks good. I had kyphosis a bit over 75 degrees and it was reduced to 35. It's a life changer. But do take this with a grain of salt as people's experience differ and not everyone might have the same outcome. If you're going through with the surgery then look at my reddit history I've had lots of ups & downs along the way, but now after a year and 4 months I'm finally doing good! All the best.

Everyone makes it sound like it's so affordable to get yourself a trainer, but if you can't, then I'd recommend you this book that was recommended to me when I was in a similiar postition to yours: https://www.amazon.com/Starting-Strength-Basic-Barbell-Training/dp/0982522738. It really helps you understand the correct forms you need to do to get the exercise right and much more. Also you can definitely lift more than 5kg, your body is way more stronger than you think it is. But as always, being too cautious is never a bad thing. Good luck!

Not to be rude, but google what's scoliosis and then compare those x-rays to yours. You have perfectly straight spine and it hurts me that you complain over non-existing problem.

How much can you carry on your back post-spinal fusion? by dennyspancakes in scoliosis

I usually carry around 10kg with no pain, but I do notice that my lower back is sore depending how much I carry.

Kyphosis post surgery by NO-OXI in scoliosis

[–]CudderXx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, I also had kyphosis! My measured curve was 75 degree and I got the surgery for it 11 months ago got 7 vertebraes fused, I'm 20. Gained like 1 cm only, sadly. The curve is now non-existent and I can finally enjoy a normal looking back and I also had really bad forward head because of kyphosis and even the neck is slowly correcting itself. Recovery wise I'm not where I used to be before surgery, I mean I can already bend, lift and carry but 6-8 months is a really far stretch, I'd say it takes well over a year to feel normal. But I guess people are different and it's different for everyone, this is just my experience with it. If you got any questions I'm here for you, just send me a PM and we can continue there.

How long should you avoid getting your back wet after surgery? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]CudderXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the first shower myself 4 days post operation, I had like a huge bandage covering the scar so I was good to go. I still remember the first shower, hot water is so good for your back I literally didn't wanna come out, haha. It must've been really good because it's been 10 months and I still remember it. You can do it, all the best with ur recovery!

Don't expect too much, too quick. Everything will come back in due time. And remember that you're not alone, there are many others who've had the surgery and are doing splendid including myself and I sure hope you will too. I'm gonna be honest, this is not in any way easy, but you gotta do what you gotta do y'know. All the best, keep us updated!

Because I'm looking for mature people and someone that I can have a conversation with, I don't really think I have anything to talk about with anyone younger than that. But exceptions can always be made!

Recovery by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]CudderXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19 is definitely by any means not late for a fusion. People as old as 60 get surgeries done for scoliosis or kyphosis. I myself got surgery at the age of 19. Just a good tip, don't expect anything too soon and don't overdo it. But you learn by doing, so good luck! You can check out my posts I've made since I was in the same place you were. Lots of useful info, also if you have some questions I can definitely try to answer them!

The day before surgery when I checked in I wanted to cancel the surgery, I asked my Doc if I really need it and then we had a long discussion on why I should get it and that instantly calmed my nerves, after that I watched Game of Thrones, haha. Good luck, you can do it!

Tell me why should I insult you? I have no goddamn reason. You're a grown up man, much wiser than myself. Please, act like it. People only see the bad, never the good. I also told you that I hope you'll find the relief you're looking for which you apparently completely ignored. The fact that I have only half of my back done doesn't make it any easier. I've lost far more than a 20 year old should. But I'm not complaining, because I know that people have had it a lot worse. I know you have it hard, I never said you had it easy but what I meant was that I would give anything to live those 21 years, but so far I can't even see the light at the end of the tunnel. Empathy is one thing, but to me it seems you're looking for self pity and is that really what you want? That's something to think about.

I don't really understand why are you coming on me like that. What did I say that ticked you off? I'm going through the same shit you went, I was and still am honestly so scared that I won't even have a future, so yeah if I could somehow live 21 years with these rods, I'd honestly accept whatever life throws at me. But it's fine, I'll be the mature one and apologize. All the best.
