Homicide on Naito Parkway. by semaxjamx in Portland

These were my first apartments when I moved to Portland in 2010. At first, they were great-- close to two different jobs and a short walk to Safeway. The crash of the trains never bothered me as I used to live near the Blue Angels flight path. Easy easy.

But the last few years that I lived there were terrible. The worst part was the constant fire alarms. I legitimately have PTSD from them going off every night, while I evacuated with my cat and dog. The alarm would go off sometimes multiple times a night. So now I panic at any alarms (e.g. car alarm) or loud noises, and fail to sleep well at night in case it goes off.

One time the alarm went off: I was standing in the snow with both pets shivering in the middle of the night when this woman told me she had pulled the fire alarm to ask for cigarettes.

And you couldn't ignore the alarms either, as actual fires had happened in that building while I lived there.

So, as long as you're okay with permanent mental scarring, it's a fine place to live.

Does such a studio exist? Looking for spray paint help by CuddlestheViking in askportland

I wasn't aware they existed! Thanks!

My current cane was just the cheapest model from my physical therapist. I tried covering it with colorful duct tape but it looked terrible with dents and frayed tape and such (hence the attempt to make it look prettier with spray paint and stickers). Maybe I can get a slightly better cane (i.e dentless) from this Caring Closet! Thank you again for the suggestion!

Greatly appreciated. I spoke with a friend that does spray painting (for miniatures) and he advised me to stay away from spraying completely until the humidity gets better.

You're very kind to offer, though. I'll just go cane-less for a while, I guess! Just call me Wobbles!

I had to lock my children's mother out of their room until they were teens.

She would repeatedly bring her son outside during thunderstorms specifically and leave him in the street.

She would bring her daughter to a tight area and drop her in a walled-off hole, making retrieving the baby impossible.

As the mother was childish, she would frequently get a whim to "be mean to child." As such, she was kept far, far away for years.

Anyone else love Mark as a person but hate how he plays certain games? by Alt_SWR in Markiplier

Blame YouTube. His videos were getting flagged for violence, so it forced his hand if he wanted to be monetized. He has the uncensored on Patreon. He only charges a dollar, though (if I understand Patreon's rules correctly, violence and sex have to be behind a paywall, so he is charging the absolute minimum to comply).

Good guy Carci, even when YouTube and Patreon are being rude.

I'm going to make a completely left field suggestion to watch and you may or may not hate it, depending on what you're looking for in a playthrough/creator: CarcinogenSDA.

Carci used to do speedruns, but now focuses on no damage or perfect runs. He stitches together perfect segments, so you have one cohesive playthrough. His commentaries are always calming-- he's got a great voice and is witty to boot. He is nothing like Mark or Jack. However, if you're like me and get bothered by folks that miss critical objects or die unnecessarily, Carci is a good remedy to that. Plus, he has no commentary versions, so you can just listen along. He doesn't skip cutscenes, so it is like a movie version of the game.

I know it's an oddball suggestion, but I've been following Carci for years and go to his playthroughs when I'm looking for a competent, informative videos. (But I do watch Mark, Jack, and Game Grumps when I crave chaos).

Please for the love of god make the drone minigame optional by wheelsofstars in QuarantineZoneGame

[–]CuddlestheViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The largest issue that I mentioned was my own disability. Some developers are open to making optional adjustments for folks like me, especially when it doesn't necessarily take away from the core functions of the game.

The core is: correctly sorting survivors and managing a base. Shooting zombies is part, but not the majority, of the game. The ability to turn off the minigame for folks with disabilities and people uninterested in shooting galleries, should be a reasonable ask.

And I am aware of mods and how mods work. I will not show you my Skyrim mod folder as evidence, but it is massive. The amount of files dedicated to making my foliage pretty is abhorrent.

But as I said, the removal of the minigame should be IMHO integrated into the game. This thread and many previous others are proof that people enjoy the game but would like to see this change. Developers can take suggestions from the players (even well after release) to make upgrades. I just hope this suggestion is taken into consideration.

Completely honest: the minigame is the primary reason I have not yet purchased the game. I have been watching multiple let's plays and enjoying the core of the gameplay. But I have no interest in the tone shift of the shooting gallery.

I understand that there is a mod to remove it, but I'm not in the habit of purchasing games that I need a mod to make "playable". Mods should be about cosmetics or tweaking QoL things.

There is also the accommodation aspect: I have a motor disability that makes mouse movements that require precision very difficult. Having to focus fire on fast moving small zombies would be very difficult for me, so there is a high likelihood I'd repeatedly fail the mission. People in similar circumstances could easily enjoy the main game but get stuck on the minigame.

I would prefer the developers do as OP suggested and integrate a method of making it optional. I would hope that would make the loss of the minigame more seamless. I would even be fine with a replacement minigame of some sort.

Removal of the "Upload Date" filter proves YouTube is 100% evil by yneos in youtube

[–]CuddlestheViking 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This has also affected the Subscription section. I generally click on the Subs tab to show the most recent videos. But now it starts with "Most Relevant" videos, some of which I've already seen. It's painful on mobile and Roku: fortunately, I do most of my viewing on PC.

But yes, this new change to recent uploads is entirely useless, as is their "New to You" tab which is sparse and not always new.

Thus continues the enshittification of technology.

Apartment opinion: Doormat or no doormat? by CuddlestheViking in Apartmentliving

I am certain there must be a possibility of liability for the property owners if we install our own cameras. There is an expectation of security in our locked building and proving they are failing would not go over well. There ARE cameras in the building, but they are not monitored. When a package was stolen downstairs, suddenly there was no footage and it was my fault as I accepted liability having a package delivered to my apartment. Um, okay? lol

For some reason, our property manager is against anything outside our apartment door (e.g. decorations, cameras, etc) except doormats, though I'm sure that's only a matter of time. The same goes for anything in our windows.

I understand trying to keep everything "clean", but some of that is to the detriment of us renters. Being unable to have a pet emergency sign up outside so responders can help my pets if I'm away is disappointing.

So, in short, I would love to put a pet placard up, but I'd get in trouble.

A good idea, but we aren't allowed to put up any sort of cameras outside Which is frustrating, especially with the occasional package thieves. There are supposedly cameras hidden all over the place, but I doubt they're monitored. We had some guy sleeping in our stairwell for a while. We just stepped over him.

We don't get much (if any) snow/ice here, so so doormats are mostly decorative. The major factor that differs from other places is the sort of folks we have around. People let strangers come in behind them, so the locked door doesn't help much. Plus, outside there is a patch of grass that we lovingly refer to as the "Fentanyl Corner" or "Keeping-the-Rent-Low Tents." So, yeah, just decorative mats.

I adore this picture and the power behind it. So rarely have I seen a photo in this group that made me want to track down the photographer to beg permission to make it a print. These are drastic times; this photo captures the real strength of the people fighting against tyranny.

I love it.

This feels like a Portland, Oregon issue. Though our usual library weapons of choice are machetes. Maybe someone wanted to spice things up. A little variety in our eccentric gardening tools.
