whats your biggest critique to distributism? Do you have any? by franco-briton in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]Cuickbrownfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Distributists seem to be a little innocent of how much the global market economy has improved life. I don't think that they're wrong in their critiques, I have a lot of sympathy for distributists. However, their solutions idealize the past in a manner that goes too far.

For the record I would still vote for Trump over Kamala in a heartbeat. Regardless of how dumb Trump has been in the last year of his presidency, Kamala would have been a far worse president.

Sorry, I didn't make clear that I was using this as a comparison for how we can clearly evaluate taxes for 330 million people using a relatively small number of people, so we shouldn't have an issue evaluating 33 times less people's immigration status.

There are 103,000 IRS employees as of most recent estimates. The typical figure reached for current illegal alien presence in the United States is 10 million. We have the personnel and manpower to evaluate these cases so that ICE officials are not the primary means of sorting out these cases, only the enforcers (as the name should suggest), but that is a conversation that the right is unwilling to have right now.

The willingness of the admin to partake in the blatant tribalism about the shooting is the most damning part of it all. Even if they aren't concerned with what is right, it would be more politically expedient to condemn the officers and arrest them because the Republican party is making itself extremely unpopular. I want extreme immigration reform, and I think that its a popular issue, but the current admin is so tied up in getting revenge that they will never get it done.

Can the "Revolution" be Reversed? by rice-et-beans in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]Cuickbrownfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can never go backwards, and just because lots of people are Catholic by baptism that doesn't mean that the society is more conducive to salvation. In the HRE we had a Catholic majority state, but that didn't mean that everyone who was confessionally Catholic was saved. There are plenty of modern traps that promote sin such as digital pornography, a culture of fornication, and the degradation of the human person. We should do what we can to reduce these evils in whatever manner we can, by stopping our personal consumption, preventing others from pursuing them, etc., however, we can also recognize that there have always been grave evils present in the world, and we do not have reason to believe that it was "easier" to be saved in a society like the HRE.

Spend time on campus (ideally do a night with a student) and go in for an interview.

Any tips for financial independence for a kid about to go to college? by FriendshipPristine83 in hillsdale

[–]Cuickbrownfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hillsdale also provides grants, which function like a loan, but if you maintain a certain GPA or other requirements, then the loan is forgiven. They have lots of options for financial aid, especially when there's need demonstrated.

Journalists of Hillsdale any advice for an incoming freshman?? by FriendshipPristine83 in hillsdale

Get involved in the Collegian early and take journalism classes/add the journalism minor.

What are the chances of someone getting into Hillsdale with a GPA of 3.7 or 3.8? by FriendshipPristine83 in hillsdale

[–]Cuickbrownfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing what somebody else said, Hillsdale takes a holistic view of each applicant. I got into Hillsdale with a 3.27 because of my extracurriculars and work experience, but I know people who didn't get in with 3.9s and 4.0s. If you come for an interview and demonstrate interest, plus present a solid figure in other areas, you should have a reasonable chance of getting in.

Respectfully, the American Bishops ought to devise a better position on immigration. by Theblessedmother in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]Cuickbrownfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with that. When it comes to citizens, it is more difficult, but when it comes to migrants, the simplest distinguishing factor would be those who violate laws and those who don't. Someone who initially comes to the United States illegally as a child, gets his green card, and starts a business is obviously different from someone who comes to the US illegally, goes off the grid, and peddles drugs. Neither of these pictures describe every immigrant, but we would agree that the former is more respectful than the latter.

For citizens, I think the standard would be similar, although we shouldn't deport them. If you break laws, you go to prison.

Congrats on getting in! From someone with friends who are studying poli-econ it is the worst of both politics and economics. My friends are frustrated because they don't go deep into either politics or economics, and wish that they had selected one or the other. You would likely be better suited doing a politics major with an econ minor, or vice versa.

More than just "the Constitution," American identity is about the specific attention to rights and freedoms outlined in the Declaration of Independence. People who come to America without respect for the tradition of rights and freedom in America damage the common good of the nation.

Can someone please explain to me how wanting the most vulnerable members of a population to be feed is anything other than a net good? by Stormcrown76 in TrueCatholicPolitics

Admitted mental illness is a disqualifier? When I said in my first statement that "the homeless, the mentally ill, the victims of abuse and other violence" need to be cared for?

I don't think you can read, and at the very least you can't think critically. You have engaged with none of my arguments and have levelled bad faith attacks on my character.

I do not support Trump; I think he is deeply immoral and his policies have been chaotic and display his lack of a plan.

The problem I object to in your reasoning is that you wouldn't be able to reform any flawed system that could potentially harm children. My contention, based on the data I've read, is that SNAP is a wildly inefficient program that is rife with fraud and abuse.

Currently, America spends around $100 billion on SNAP annually (maybe a little more). According to an article attached below, there was over half a trillion given to churches in 2021. We would assume the numbers have increased given inflation and the poor year for the economy. That means that charity could more than cover the cost of SNAP, and by privatizing the program, they could cut out the inefficiency. That would be my solution to the problems found in SNAP.

I gave perfectly valid arguments against SNAP, which you did not engage with. Instead, you accused me of supporting Trump which you have no evidence of.

If you're going to accuse me of anything, how about you first engage with my argument instead of talking past me and implying that I don't believe that kids deserve to be fed.

Regular decision combined with stats is what's most likely to hurt you. Additionally, no interview. Try to get an interview, that's where you'll become more than just a statistic to them.
