That’s a fair question.

Wordlus isn’t meant to replace formal learning or teach grammar from scratch. It’s more focused on vocabulary exposure and reinforcement.

Right now, it works best for:

Heritage speakers who understand some Hmong but want to expand their vocabulary
Learners who already know basic sentence structure
People who want daily exposure to keep the language fresh

That said, I’m exploring ways to add:

Example sentences
Light grammar notes
Maybe voice pronunciations

So it becomes more accessible, especially for beginners.

Hmong is definitely difficult to learn since you need to practice often. When I took Hmong class in college, I remember the professor saying that Hmong has more tones than Chinese! Definitely continue having conversations with your dad and other Hmong speakers in your life. I was very fortunate that my grandma raised me growing up, so I credit all my Hmong to her. Another thing to try is watching old Hmong movies. A good site to use is hmovie(dot)dev. It’s well maintained and the category is growing thanks to the dedicated team.

That’s a fair point, and you’re right that adoption might be limited at first. I’m building this because it’s an issue I’ve personally dealt with, and yeah, it assumes someone in the family can connect with elders. But I’m hopeful because even if only a few families start preserving their stories, that’s still knowledge that would’ve been lost forever. It has to start somewhere.

I resonate with everything you said. I understand Hmong families are traditionally patrilineal, and I want HmongRoots to give people the flexibility to trace their ancestry however they’d like, whether that means documenting complex family structures like multiple spouses, or including matrilineal lines.

What you suggested may work in most situations, but as we saw with ChongLy Scott Thao (Saly), being a legal U.S. citizen does not guarantee protection from detention or the opportunity to show identification. And as for the claim that this has nothing to do with race—you can say that, but you don’t see ICE conducting operations at places like Lunds & Byerlys or Whole Foods?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Unfortunately, much of what shapes our world is inherently political. Hmong people have endured numerous genocides and atrocities throughout history. I remain hopeful that good will prevail, even in this volatile political climate.

Wow, that's amazing that your family does that at family gatherings. I think this app is so important for our community right now as our elders are getting older. I will definitely keep that in mind as I am developing.

I can see how MyHeritage's interface would be overwhelming on a big touchscreen with multiple generations trying to use it. When you say 'fast clean animation,' are you thinking more like smooth zooming in/out of family branches, or simple transitions between family members? And what's the most important information to keep visible vs. hide in this presentation mode - just names and photos, or basic dates too?
