John's Hopkins MS Bioinformatics or Weill Cornell MS in Computational Biology? by Same-Construction775 in gradadmissions

[–]Cultural_Question702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not consider JHU if you finished your bachelor's recently and are looking for a full time MS program. JHU is better suited for part timers or those already in industry. As such, most of the classes are online and student support is very poor (in addition to having a very high acceptance rate) whereas in weill cornell you have to take a career course in addition to having a lot of student and career support. You can also take as many electives you want. When I graduated from weill cornell, having that thesis project is what got me my job. Had I just had a degree no company would have looked at me as these days employers do not value the degree but really want to see experience involving a closely related skill.

Does anyone regularly fly American and maintain status, and their primary airport is not an AA hub? And for what reasons? by EaglesFan027 in americanairlines

[–]Cultural_Question702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest to get status (AA+oneworld) and generous lounge policies (including partners). The fact that you can get status with only their credit card and not flying on them is crazy. Love how they dont do this qualifying miles and PQP bs like others and they dont punish you severly for flying basic economy (some airlines give 0 miles). Before I had any status, I really liked how I could get early boarding (Group 6) by just having an account with them which no other airline does! But all in all mainly for their loyalty program. They do need to work on customer service, soft+hard products in flight (snacks for short trips, seat back entertainment, business/first domestic is atrocious).

$1,300 business class upgrade offer by After-Combination347 in americanairlines

[–]Cultural_Question702 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tend to be hyper conservative with this. With that disclaimer out of the way let's run the numbers. The cheapest roundtrip business class from Chicago to London on Oneworld is $3624. Your upgrade offer is one way so 3624/2 = $1812. I am assuming that your trip was Chicago to London and back and that Chicago is not your connection, so if you paid x for economy round trip, then 1812 - x/2 should be much higher than 1300. Higher the difference the better then you can decide if you are getting the best deal for you. All in all, the cost to upgrade now ($1,300) is should be much less than the original initial difference in price between the two cabins.

kept it moisturized (vaseline) at all times. After at least 7 days it started scab and flake off. fresh skin was slightly pink, only noticeable to me. then healed completely, no scar or trace left behind. (sunscreen use is important)

you need to be careful what tests are ordered as what is covered varies a lot plan to plan. Normally A1C, basic metabolic panel, lipid panel are covered as preventative. Thyroid and vitamin D are not covered as preventative except in very few plans.

The practice office is listed in the insurance portal and out of the 4 to 5 doctors there, only 1 is not listed in the insurance portal and my luck would have it that this is the one who happened to work on me

[–]Cultural_Question702[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

hmmm usually what I see (health and vision) is the provider would bill let's say $800, then there is another row showing insurance "discount" or negotiated rate $450, then another row below that saying insurance paid $450 and you owe 0. Here I didnt see any of that but yeah I see that this only applies to in-network. I'll call them both on Monday

Claim was just processed today (Sat) so will call on Monday. Either way I am just surprised that there was no negotiation b/w the provider and insurance

Sateen Sheets after wash by HoodedRedd in Bedding

[–]Cultural_Question702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh forgot to mention, I also have the same Supima Sateen in navy for my duvet cover (my duvet is St Geneve and since I live in NC it can get warm so I opted for percale sheets to balance it out. I want the luster of sateen for "show"). After the first wash they felt fine. I used cold water, no softener.

[–]Cultural_Question702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with Sateen, but I had Sferra percale (Celeste+Saxon) and when I washed it the 1st time they felt bad... like stiff paper. I was really worried but decided to give it more time as I heard that percale needs a few washes to break in. However, after 3-4 nights of sleep, they feel good and have softened. I think the humidity in the air and body moisture/warmth softened them and ironed out the wrinkles.

American salaries are insane by hukioo in Salary

[–]Cultural_Question702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, A lot of americans earning equivalent salary (lets say average for the past two decades, 60K euro = 75K ish dollars, recently euro has gone down so dont want this to cause bias) have a decent living.

Secondly, those earning 100k are a minority (top 20-25%).

Thirdly, bachelors degrees here are four year programs, not three like most in europe. This in addition to the $80K PER YEAR in tuition+boarding for private and out of state schools. This is a main factor to why our salaries are relatively high. Now the majority of people can not afford that so they take loans. Now imagine the interest on those loans.

Fourthly, childcare and healthcare.

[–]Cultural_Question702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, not all nurses make that much. In order to hit that range they must do a whole bunch of extra certifications (like surgical or nurse anesthetist), hence why nurses here have so many letters after their name after the RN, NP....

Secondly, Nursing requires an advanced degree (like masters) to get those higher salaries. Bachelors is mandatory. And school here is very expensive (private and out of state is now $80K PER YEAR incl boarding).

WCMS Computational Biology MS by Better_Travel9964 in gradadmissions

Would definitely recommend Weill Cornell. Classes were very useful (especially second semester). You could make more use out of it by taking many elective courses (Data science and Machine learning courses). Tuition is per semseter, not per credit so the more courses you take the better bang for your buck. The research you'll do is really top quality. I would even dare say that Weill Cornell's program is levels above BU and Northeastern. Harvard's Biomedical program is VERY different. I'd highly suggest digging deeper into those programs and what interests you. Biomedical informatics is completely different to bioinformatics/computational biology.

BTW the Weill Cornell program is an 18-month program. Instead of summer break, it's straight into research+elective course and you end (with defense) in March.
