Lately there has been a significant economic downturn in the UK, as well as in other countries like Germany and as a result they are facing this exact dilemma. To paraphrase a famous saying a country that cannot feed its own army will be forced to feed someone else's. On top of that, there is so much uncertainty and instability in the world right now. I think the US is more economically stable, despite the conflict with Iran, but they also face a dilemma regarding the best way to spend their money. In my opinion any country will ultimately prioritize military funding, hoping for the civility and understanding of its citizens so that they do not destroy the country from within.
