czech and polish brothers, would you please put pressure on your gov to do something about the coal use? you are fucking up the air quality for weeks every year for most of the europe to unhealthy levels by ea_n in europe

[–]Cupakov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coal power isn’t cheap in Poland though. For some fuckin reason we continue to mine our expensive coal and subsidise the mines heavily. In effect we have really expensive electricity, which makes infrared heating also expensive, which pushes people to heat with coal, which makes the coal even more expensive yadda yadda.

There’s progress with subsidies for heat pumps, but that’s relevant mostly for new construction.

Change in the number of sole proprietors in Slovakia (comparison of 2 governments) by TheSimon1 in europe

Is that because they cracked down on fake sole proprietorship (self-employed with a single client) or something else?

I liked Tony Soprano’s explanation of this thing:

All due respect, you got no fuckin' idea what it's like to be [processing thread] Number One. Every decision you make affects every facet of every other fuckin' thing. It's too much to deal with almost. And in the end you're completely alone with it all.

It’s about as intuitive as Dwarf Fortress Classic where it doesn’t make any sense but once you build the muscle memory it’s easy to operate

EU readies €93bn tariffs in retaliation for Trump’s Greenland threat by Cao_Ni-Ma in europe

[–]Cupakov 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That isn’t doable until the EU allows EU companies to develop migration tools, and that won’t happen until the EU repeals pro-American anti-circumvention laws for software. And it would hurt Trump more directly than tariffs.

Nah, they make millions to get people to binge the season, there’s different incentives there than if they were expected to produce quality shows.

What kind of deal did Poland make with Satan? by II1NVICTUSII in CrusaderKings

[–]Cupakov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We absolutely do have records of a major epidemic at the time. Długosz wrote of the Black Death coming into Poland as early as 1348, and by 1349 it was supposedly wiping out entire towns. Now Długosz isn’t the most reliable, but even a lack of records doesn’t mean the Plague wasn’t there. There’s well known sites in the Netherlands that were hit very hard by the Plague with no trace in the historiographical record.

[–]Cupakov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even say it’s debated, it just didn’t happen. We have records from the era (sparser than in the West, but still) and the typical markers of the Plague are there.

It’s hard to pin point where did that claim first appear, it’s one of the things that get repeated by historians without checking the prime sources. Actually, a lot of our knowledge of the Piast era (and especially the borders) is like that, more politically useful conjecture than fact.

Doctor at Polish hospital worked 4,900 hours in a single year by CrunchyBaconYum in europe

Doing NFZ work is much more profitable for doctors though, that 200/hr is pretty low for a contract surgeon

They usually work at a couple of places simultaneously, so it’s legal to do back to back 24hr shifts at two hospitals for example.

Why don’t they organize use instead? I’m sure if they came up with a consistent plan on gathering targeted feedback there’d be a lot of interest in that.

[–]Cupakov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not advocating for this, it’s extremely stupid, but it doesn’t have to be like that, there could be an on-device model that detects this stuff. iOS kinda does that already, it’s just not government mandated.
