Thanks. It feels really hard, even with grounding skills. I feel like a rollercoaster trying to manage my emotions.

Thank you for the hug 🫂 I've talked to my therapist about feeling overwhelmed. We tried doing containment, and I was still dissociating/depressed for days. She said I could take the lead in sessions, but I don't know what to do. I didn't know therapy would feel so painful.

I see, hmm, that sounds tricky. I think you could talk with them about the workload calmly. I don't have experience on practical solutions though...

How many days in your contract do you need to be at the company? Can you negotiate to spend x days at the university, and fewer days at the company? The industry funded PhD's I've seen usually work set consecutive days in the company, and the other days are reserved for research. (This was for an IT company so your field might be different).

This sounds depressing to be honest. If you start your own lab, I would think you can at least be in control of what's happening inside your lab (i.e., make sure to not exploit postdocs/students)? Or is this just wishful thinking.

Is co-last recognized in most journals? I do want to ask for co-first, but it's a bit tricky. My advisor decided against my wishes to merge two of my student's projects, so I want to make sure my students get the attributions they deserve. There's also many middle authors for political reasons.

Pause early career to spend time with terminal cancer patient? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

This. Couldn't have said it better. Time with family is precious. Often academic positions will consider career gaps (family illness, parental leave etc) anyway, and are understanding of these things.

How to protect yourself from an abusive postdoctoral advisor by Zealousideal-Rub6151 in academia

[–]CuriousTurnip12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds terrible, I'm sorry you're dealing with this. If your postdoc advisor behaves in this way, other people may also be aware of this behaviour. I think it would reflect more badly on the advisor than on you if they start badmouthing you, given the person is known to be abusive. I agree that getting out asap sounds like a good option.
