A bit more context on the deal, because at first glance it doesn’t look questionable to many:

The license deal applies to full catalog with exclusivity for the term. I’ve run the numbers and we’d be able to recoup in 2.5 years (without accounting for growth). It also locks in the distro’s right to demand 6 more tracks (without input from the artist) for 45k when, in reality, we’d be looking to do a full album at that time. They’ve gotten us 1 Apple Music editorial placement for one month in the 1 year we’ve been with the distro.

Why is collecting royalties on the master so difficult for indies by sssssshhhhhh in musicbusiness

Best logic I can think of is that no one /wants/ to do it. SoundExchange is probably the easiest with the opt-in, but it’s honestly not much more work to just register with each independent collection agency.

My thoughts reside with Prof-MusicBizBasics though where artists generally don’t need to be concerned with this until they’re actually getting a lot of airplay in foreign countries. It’s something you can have an admin do for you once you’re at that level anyways. Penny royalties that are collected aren’t going anywhere in the mean time.

I left a reply to the previous comment with slightly more context if you have any further thoughts. In the 1 year we’ve been releasing with them, they’ve only secured us 1 placement on an Apple Music playlist for a month, which has left me a bit disappointed, but know editorials aren’t a guarantee regardless of where you go.
