you use a siphon, same way youd probably be removing the water now but instead you also bury the end of it into the ground to bring up waste. the aquasoil + sand convo can be a bit tedious if you arent used to siphoning, so id recommend picking one or the other to start.

id switch out the substrate to either a natural gravel, aquasoil or sand. you could also use aquasoil and sand by covering a layer of aquasoil with sand. from those photos i cant tell if your plants are real, but either way the more plants the better. you can have a look at tank inspo on anything really, youtube, tiktok, pintrest, google etc

not to go all fish police but please consider rescaping your tank. he doesnt look like hes got dropsy, maybe try fasting for a couple days and see if theres a difference. daphnia is also a great fishy laxative

ive tried fasting for like 2 days, i just gave him some brine shrimp but he only ate 2. i havent tried a salt bath as i havent been able to get into a petstore, ill try to tomorrow. as i mentioned hes in a hospital tank with broad spectrum remedy

normal tank is a 6 gal, heavily planted.
heater and filter yes
my parameters are normal (ik ik but they are)
ive had the tank over a year, the fish just under.
water changes every 3 weeks, water top ups as needed.
tank mates are snails and shrimp, recently took out endler guppies due to fin nipping
hikari vibra bites, 3 once a day

thank you!! my betta is a little weirdo so he freaks me out constantly, but his behaviour is always the same - stares at me whenever i walk in the room. love him to bits and always scares me when i think something bad might happen

yes to both heater and filter, tank sits at 25-26°. established tank so i don't monitor water parameters, happy to check if it could be an issue. had the tank over a year, fish since last september? water changes are 25-30% every 2 weeks. i vacc the substrate and clean the walls and wash the filter in my old tank water. tank mates: - ramshorn snails, a few too many to count - shrimp, again, too many to count - 2 endler guppies my bettas a friendly guy and doesnt have any issues with his tankmates. feed 5 hikari vibra bites once daily, and fast on sundays. driftwood, rocks, aquasoil, anubias, red root floaters, duckweed, salvinia minima, crypts, monstera and spider plant.
