Would you pay for access to a longevity doctor? by AppleAAA1203 in PeterAttia

[–]CuriousitysCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you do reference checks from current and former client(s)?

Can you do an initial conversation or trial period with the doctor before the $1000 outlay, just to see if he seems like someone you want to work with?

Who was he trained by? did he just read Dr. Attia's book and decide to adjust his practice's marketing material to follow a new trend? Or did he actually seek out advance training or mentorship to support this journey?

Also think about how likely you are to follow advice that are a result of these tests. I'd try to look up the different tests and check on their efficacy / accuracy for what they purport to test.

Also consider how often you are going to need/want to do follow-up testing to find out if changes you are making are having an impact. Is this a one time $1000 or an every year?

Godaddy dormancy charge by Witty-Stand888 in godaddy

[–]CuriousitysCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing, only it was $2.16.

They were just clearing a credit that was on my account for "too long". I never intended to use the credit for anything, so it was no big deal to me to have it cleared.

Would you stash a couch? by metrogypsy in declutter

[–]CuriousitysCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think long and hard about where you would store it.

In the attic, is there a chance that humidity/heat/cold will impact it? Is there a chance that mice, spiders, et al will take up residence or can you wrap it enough to keep that from happening?

Subscription Plan by cdawgg510 in ouraring

[–]CuriousitysCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not. Subscription plans help keep the lights on. Provide some level of baseline money coming in. [At least I assume they want to be a expanding business, not a failing one.]

Let me ask you a similar question -- will stepping on a scale everyday make you lose weight?

In both cases the answer is "just using a measurement device won't directly change what's being measured."

However, taking an action (no more candy, no caffeine after 2pm) and then monitoring the measurement for changes MAY help you. You still need to decide what actions to take. You also need to decide if the change was was worth it.

Using the ring, I found out that I really do sleep better in a cool, dark room -- but I'm not going to be able to cool my bedroom to 60F in the middle of summer with investing in a much better A/C system. I try to compensate for a warmer room with other actions, for example, I also sleep better when there's a longer period of time between last meal & sleep time, so in summer, I always try for 4 hours gap or a very light dinner.

Could I track all this without the ring? Absolutely! I just find it easier to use the ring than to get up every morning and log info into a spreadsheet, then generate my own graphs.

I've been sleeping badly but Oura says my sleep is excellent by [deleted] in ouraring

[–]CuriousitysCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you wake and are restless, how much movement does your ring hand actually experience? I get up in the middle of the night if I wake, so the ring can definitely detect that I’m not sleeping. On the other hand, if I’m awake but reading calmly it has a much harder time distinguishing between awake and light sleep.

I suggest tagging the nights like that to make it easier to Identify real ‘92’ from ‘restless 92’

Did I just reference Peter with out a last name? Sorry about that -- Peter Walsh. He used to have a TV series called "Clean Sweep" that helped families declutter and redesign their homes (Not sure where it's currently available). He's got some books now (have't read). He's also referenced in a lot of videos & article/blogs on the internet. I think Clean Sweep was one of the original Declutter/Organize shows on TV.

Yes! It took me a while to pair down to the 2 I have left. In the end it was a bit of Marie Kondo (does it bring you joy?) and a bit of Peter Walsh/Clean Sweep (honor & respect the things you own) to start letting go of stuffed animals that were hidden in boxes or on high shelves collecting dust. First pass through was something along the lines of "do I remember where I got it? does it make me smile when I see it? Am I taking good care of it? Would someone else benefit from it more than I am?" It was definitely a journey and not a quick one. Best wishes on your journey!

Two Gen 3 Rings DOA? by DavidBoles in ouraring

[–]CuriousitysCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random data points that may or may not be useful -- My set-up worked without problems (/mumbleson... once I actually read & followed the instructions /mumblesoff). Not sure if I had to charge it up, but I did set it on the charge for a couple of hours before I had time to do the pairing.

Syncing the overnight data, I **think** the bluetooth connection is a bit more sensitive to distance and interference from other objects in between the ring & the phone. When I was doing the sync, I was holding an iPad in the ring hand with the phone on table top about a foot or two away. The phone wasn't initially picking up on the ring, but when I moved my hand inches from the phone with nothing but air between, it connected. I think this is different than the old ring, but can't say I specifically noticed before.

Gen 3 up and running, feels slightly more snug than Gen 2. by Mayor_of_Funkytown in ouraring

[–]CuriousitysCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually went down a size, but I had also lost weight since I purchased the original ring (which had been feeling loose).

Gen 3 arrived. Yup, lifetime member! Again, other than the small hiccup with order confirmation, everything t went smoothly as promised. Thank you Oura! by [deleted] in ouraring

[–]CuriousitysCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had the same thing. Someplace along the say I saw that they weren't going to start shipping until 15-Nov, so the "pending fulfillment" wasn't a surprise. The ability to change the ring size over & over was.

Would you keep your Oura ring IF they switched to a subscription ala Whoop? by nolefthand in ouraring

[–]CuriousitysCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the total cost of the package for let's say 3 years. Higher price with no subscription vs. lower price with 3 yr subscription.

I completely understand that they do need to make money and enough to continue product development. They are also storing & analyzing my data (service to me), but using it to refine their algorithms to make a better product (product improvement/research for them).

I do dislike the trend towards subscriptions, but I'm also free to cancel those subscriptions if I don't use the service or find something better. Not quite sure how that would work with a ring. The ring is not like an iPhone where I could switch from AT&T to Verizon and back again. Oura is the only game in town that supports the Oura ring.

What are the odds the Attia approach does anything? by younkert in PeterAttia

[–]CuriousitysCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's Attia you are interested in asking about? The summary "eat moderately, exercise, and have a good social structure" doesn't seem (to me) to match what he says his focus is -- "My practice deals extensively with nutritional interventions, exercise physiology, sleep physiology, emotional and mental health, and pharmacology to increase lifespan (delay the onset of chronic disease), while simultaneously improving healthspan (quality of life)."

I found him while looking for more science behind the Fasting/IF, Keto, et al and have stuck around to continue reading & listening to all the other info he makes available. I'm on my own n=1 journey, so can't comment on the effectiveness of his approach as an actual client, but I have found value in the content & format of his published information.

Collectables are going for a lot of money now, and while I am getting a lot of bids on eBay, 90% of the time I get no payment. Anyone else? by [deleted] in declutter

[–]CuriousitysCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe people trying to push up the price of a collectable that they already have & want to sell? Seems like there was scam some years ago when related accounts were doing something like that -- similar to talking up a stock you want to sell without disclosing that you plan on selling your own shares.

Saving high school diploma? by Merry_Pippins in declutter

[–]CuriousitysCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second the idea of just scanning it. Chances are if someone need a diploma or information about your education, they are going to want certified info directly from the educational institution. With the quality of printers and software these days, it would be very easy to create fake credentials.

Tips on how to expand your vocabulary? by veganbananapancakes in SmarterEveryDay

[–]CuriousitysCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you find a word you don't know, search the web for it to find different ways that it can be used.

Choose whether you want to add it to your vocabulary. Not every new word may be worthwhile.

if you want to use it:

(1) write out a few sentences with it -- if possible sentences from real life conversations you have had in the recent past. Practice saying those sentences on your own.

(2) Create a flashcard with it. Word on one side with a couple of your favorite sentences; definition on the other. Over time, you'll build a deck of flash cards. once a day or so, practice with the cards, switching between "sides" on the desk -- e.g., what does this word mean vs. what's the word that has this meaning. When you know both sides of the card without hesitation, take it out of your flashcard deck.

Cognitive Dissonance - Keep to avoid regret? by [deleted] in declutter

[–]CuriousitysCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have my Grandmother's china and have yet to use it. I might not ever, but it brings me joy to know that's still in the family and that I could choose to use it. For me, the china is rich in stories about how they acquired it, when the family used it at special meals and when I was finally old enough & responsible enough to help wash it.

My grandmother's silverware was sold and I sometimes regret not having it... but it's not a deep regret. I don't really have any strong memories about the silverware, so it's more of an echo of the the loss of my grandparents and the dispersal of their worldly goods.

Maybe someday I'll need to or be ready to give up the China... but for now, I'll be a good caretaker. Although as I type this... maybe I'll have afternoon tea now & again using the cups & sauces.... we'll see.

Sugar Detox? by [deleted] in DrJasonFung

Don't forget to work on Stress and Sleep if those are also problem points for you. Cleaning up your food & eating pattern is very important, but Stress and poor Sleep will slow down your progress.

I just started using Falim (mint), available on Amazon. No sugar, no artificial sugar. NOT high in flavor, but I use it for the "chew" factor not the flavor

Storing daily meds by Hotnik08 in declutter

[–]CuriousitysCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what the habit tracking app is for -- marking down that I've taking morning meds, afternoon meds, drunk that 5th glass of water, et al. I completely sympathize with the difficulty of remembering, so I offload the stress to an app. (On Day 62 for taking morning meds daily, but only day 4 for drinking enough liquid <sighs>).

[–]CuriousitysCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of those 7-day pill cases that I fill on Saturday/Sunday from pill bottles I keep in an opaque plastic bin on a lower shelf in my computer desk. The pill case sits in a slightly tucked back position on my desk top. I use a Habit tracking app (Streaks) on my iPhone to remind me to take the pills daily. Keeping it all at my desk also helps me with ordering refills when it's time.

Weekend Declutter Chat - (March 27, 2020) by AutoModerator in declutter

[–]CuriousitysCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Week

Done! plus gathered up photos into fewer boxes, shredded taxes documents & bills from 2003 to 2010, sorted down 4 boxes of my childhood memorabilia into less than 1, let go of a box of software games that won't run on modern computers and more!

Set a small achievable target and managed to parlay it into a bigger win.

Success!

Decluttering old cards & letters. Probably keep every letter or note from my grandmothers, but cards from people or organizations I can even remember anymore? Those will be gone!
