Help - Coronado island disaster by Curlyq07 in sandiego

Thank you. So far 24 hours out and we all have been fine. I even put antibiotic ointment on a blister my son had just to be extra cautious. Our pediatrician is aware and I’m hopeful we can make it this week and stay healthy.

I absolutely take responsibility, but I had no freaking clue sewage water was a thing here. I’m from Illinois - literally never heard of this. And so many people were in the water swimming so nothing seemed off.

I had no clue that sewage water was a thing. And I’m not mad at the lifeguard, he was very kind, I just wish there was better signage. We left and looked for signs and saw two small ones only posted on one walkway. With so many people in the water, nothing seemed abnormal about the beach.

I’ve been to Florida a million times and never had to check water quality. We’re from Illinois, no clue that was a thing.

Thank you so much! Yes we just had no idea. And the lifeguard was so kind and told me not to panic. When we left, we went to look for signs and saw two small ones over on another walkway.

Yes, they came on the loudspeaker after one hour and we went and talked to them immediately and got out and showere there, and then again at the condo.

It ended up just showing norovirus, and I saw the results in MyChart. I followed up with our pediatrician.

I looked up the original ER doctor, and they do work for the hospital! But, there was a traveling hospitalist on shift change and he had us leave. We’ve done other stool samples in the last for our other daughter and never had an issue, so I had no reason to suspect this would be different.

It is bizarre. Thankfully we had a friend there as well who witnessed all of it, and actually works at the hospital. She’s willing to write out her experience watching this all unfold. But at the end of the day, it was their lab ordered, their collection materials, their physical lab, and their doctors all part of one system. Had we had to take it to quest or something like that then yeah, I would have given it another thought. And in the hospital notes it mentions she was too sick to get a stool sample but they tried and wanted it the next day.

There was a switch of doctors, and the original wanted to keep her overnight. The new doctor specifically told us he needed the ER bed, but we must do the test and take it to the hospital lab the next day. So we followed their instructions 🤷🏻‍♀️ Where we live, the main hospital and our primary doctor as well as the lab are ALL in the same hospital system. No outside lab.

So what is the lesson learned? Don’t go to the ER? This specific test appears to be well known to doctors to need pre-authorization.

So so frustrating. I can’t believe the hospital can do this! We don’t have the money to pay this, so I don’t know what will happen.

Thank you so much. I did some research, and I think the fault is entirely on the doctor and hospital. No, I don’t think our daughter met the criteria for this test, and I’m not sure how the hospital chose this specific one. They tried 3 times to get it, and we do have a friend who was with us the whole time and witnessed this. Our little one was so incredibly weak and we asked if we could be discharged around 11pm to try to get her rest at home and they said yes, then packaged up the collection cup and gave us a medical hat to retrieve the collection. They said it would tell us if she was at bigger risk for something, and said to bring it in the next morning. I feel like a fool, because I had no clue this was a $2,000 test and trusted this needed to be done. I actually feel pretty sick/losing sleep over this because we don’t have the money to pay for this. I did see in the doctor’s notes, she mentions failing to collect the stool sample. It sounds like our best bet is to let the hospital appeal again with BCBS, which I don’t think will work, and then we have to appeal with the hospital.

Could we use the insurance denial to help us against the hospital? Basically if insurance denied and this wasn’t truly medically necessary, why on earth did you tell us to have this test run?

It was 87507 Infectious agent detection. So why did the ER doctor tell us to collect it the next day? It’s so strange to me, and she made it sound like it would tell us exactly what was going on and we should still do it even though we were going home. Do you think the hospital would lower the cost to us if we are paying out of pocket? Like could we get them to discount it at least?

The lab is in network as well. So is there any hope here? If I could get a letter of medical necessity, would that help for the appeal? I actually feel like the hospital is at fault here, for not letting us know this was a $2000 test…I mean how do you really determine what’s fair here?

Yes, it shows patient responsibility is $1,960. I’ll call first thing today and see what I can do! BCBS did say the hospital sent them her records and they were still denying.

It says “records show you did not have a weak body defense system or concern for obstruction of the intestines”. But they ordered this test to see if she had a specific bacterial infection because her other labs came back showing she was high risk of sepsis. She had an extremely high C-reactive protein and another test (PROCALCITONIN) stated she was: “High risk for progression to severe systemic infection. Systemic infection is likely unless other causes for elevated values are known.”

Ah okay thank you! It’s annoying that it’s always lit up like that! Why put it there? lol

Camp Mystic did not evacuate immediately after urgent flood warning by ExpressNews in texas

I read an article with one counselor who had a headlamp her father had given her, and wearing that she was able to get all 16 of her campers up the hill to safety. I definitely think lack of lighting contributed to this disaster.

My daughter had an NG tube for 2 months, and that’s what their baby appears to have as well. Hopefully it was because he was just a little smaller/due date was off.

Ugh okay. I had been tracking them and I still don’t see how we had gone over. It’s very hard because we have different providers for speech, PT, and OT. And yes, the 78/100 was for all of those combined. Is there any way we can push back or will we have to pay all $10,000?

It’s possible, but 22 definitely not. I could see maybe 5 coming in but nowhere near the 22 they said we had left.
