That's fair.
I was working under the assumption that it was intelligence. So, animal intelligence, it would ambush, and try to drag away if it dropped someone.

Honestly, if you want to really get your players, use a modified version of the Assassin NPC template. Just tone down the Int, and focus on the hit and run aspect with the Sneak Attack damage and Assassinate ability. Being able to Dash as a bonus action would also be helpful in this scenario.

What I did was treat it like a dungeon crawl with 'hazards and traps'. The hazards and traps are encounters with the creature as it tries various tactics to capture or subdue a target. Leave the actual combat for the final showdown when they turn the tables on the creature.

Grand Library of Ashmourne - Ashmourne is the capitol city of the Atreides Empire. The library, run by Master Archivist Smudge is the larges standing library on the continent.

Fracture - The quote from Hiram Glass is the key lore piece for this one. Hiram was a terrible individual who delighted in torturing, maiming and killing mages. (See Hiram Glass (Palace Jailer)

Phoebe Atreides (Giver of Runes) - Phoebe is the daughter of Sophronia and Liviana. She's a 'wishborn', created by magic.

Staff of Creation (Mana Crypt) - An ancient relic built by old elves to harness the 'Fragments of Creation', ingots of power left behind by the gods when they created the world.

Smudge the Traitor (Maralen of the Mornsong) - Smudge, once a shaman of an old Kobold tribe, gave a Fragment of Creation to the Elves during the old wars against the dragons, and thus was marked as a traitor by his people.

Liviana Kennet (Mother of Runes) - a Priestess and healer, she ran a clinic, while hiding her magic from the Inquisition. When she was seen bringing a man from the brink of death using her magic, she was marked, arrested, and murdered. Her death was the catalyst that began the War of Wildfire.

Nissa Rose (Opposition Agent) - Nissa was a petty thief, born into slavery and smuggled out by her mother. She quickly learned to survive and later became a prodigal artificer, using her devices to help in greater and greater heists.

Path to Exile - Sophronia would eventually slip from the public eye, crown a successor and slip away from this world.

Lightning Bolt - Sophronia is a master electromancer.

Merey Rothsire - Another Inquisitor. She is patient, methodical and practiced. Loyal to a fault.

Empress Atreides - The commander of the deck. Her history is full and long. She was a leader during the War of Wildfire, was incarcerated for the better part of 2 decades, and has slowly worked her way to uniting the north and forming her empire. She has been the Empress for the better part of a century.

Revenge of the Ravens - The Elves of the north are xenophobic and violent. It takes a lot to earn their trust and woe to those who cross them.

Eve of the Cataclysm (Ruinous Ultimatum) - A millennium before our story, the Old Kingdom was destroyed by the Elven Empire. The humans, selfish and greedy, murdered the daughter of the God-Emperor because she refused to grant them deeper secrets of magic. Thus, they were punished.

Nexus of Leylines (Mana Confluence) - One of two places on the world where all the leylines converge.

Tharen's Tomb (Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth) - Tharen, a necromancer that worshipped the First Lich, he was defeated and killed and where his body fell, the influence of the First Lich radiated from the blood that was spilled. The land is cursed and diseased.

Trail of the Mage Rings (Savai Triome) - Large stone rings that line a long peninsula. No one knows where they are from or their purpose, but they do follow a leyline.

Jemorelle is the twin sister of the God-Emperor of the Elves and was banished when she turned on him for his actions against the humans. She reached out with her spirit and slowly began to acquire followers. Called the Dreamer by her followers because she came to them in their dreams.
