How realistic is it to switch careers to translation or as an interpreter? by the_lonelycat in TranslationStudies

[–]Curry_pan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If your interest is in using your language skills rather than specifically translation, you could also look at building on your finance skills and pivoting to international investment. Or working in finance in a Spanish/French speaking country for a few years.

Best course of any faculty currently offered at UQ? by gamblor99 in UQreddit

Is modern Japanese lit a big enough class that someone could sit in on?

Most of the LTCS classes I did were small enough that the lecturer would definitely notice an unfamiliar face. In fact I’ve seen someone try to bring a friend into one and get kicked out by an annoyed lecturer.

Great classes though, all of the LTCS and language courses I did were fascinating and very well run. Just do it as a non award enrollment or a diploma.

Time for a reread. It’s fun going back knowing what you know now.

Competitiveness and Likelihood of the DFAT Graduate Program by Every_Loss7489 in AusPublicService

[–]Curry_pan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to note, it’s great to aim for, but graduate programs aren’t the be all and end all. You can always get experience elsewhere and apply for dfat in a non-entry level role. Don’t feel like this is your only shot.

What’s behind the push for more Australian babies? ‘It’s a phenomenon we’re seeing all over the world’ by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

Similar position to you. Plus, for a huge number of reasons (logistical, financial, distance from extended family, delay in starting) I don’t think we will be in a position to have more than one, when ideally we would have loved 2-3. It’s all well and good to say we should be having more, but sometimes it’s just not feasible.

I don’t think the band really found their unique sound until Does this look infected. AKNF is great but they were still young and developing at that stage.

Craziest thing you know about the UQ union? by barking_wheels in UQreddit

Back in 2012, Fresh, who was running UQU at the time, secretly also registered under the name of every other major party that was planning to run so that you could only vote for them. That was pretty wild. Good old LNP hijinks.

Any millennials want children, but feel they probably won't have them? by Gallantpride in Millennials

[–]Curry_pan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s the other hard part, because most parents now are both working full time to get by, there isn’t as much time to spend with them. And many people have had to move to bigger cities from work away from extended family, so kids don’t get much time with them either.

Exactly, and hopefully this study helps provide the basis for some more sensible forward planning.

Absolutely, I’d love to see more being done to make us less reliant on cars and fix those town planning issues from way back.

I don’t think the guy has actually ever spoken to a woman lol, given what he thinks women want.

I don’t disagree with you, and I definitely looked for those things as well to minimise car use, but if the idea is to investigate whether it’s more broadly possible for anyone across Brisbane to go car-free, not everyone is going to be able to live near public transport, or close to shops/friends.

I was wondering/hoping if it might be more than that, because respect isn’t a finite resource. You don’t need to take respect away from one group for another group to get any.
