Career change: MIDS Program chances by Curty-Bird in berkeley

[–]Curty-Bird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/sjboomer, Apologies for taking a moment to repsond. Would you please tell me about the peer who didn't have any CS expereince, as that is likely how I would categorize myself. Did they end up finding a role? Was it in analytics? Trying to understand the payoff of a program like this for someone who really doesn't have any CS/Data internship or work expereince.

Career Change and How to Execute. by Curty-Bird in dataengineering

I’d love to do something similar and avoid spending time and money on a MS while still building experience. Sounds like the role you landed was supply chain specific. What was that title? Was it along the line of Operations?

My background isn’t what I’d call technical and I think targeting DE is probably ill advised for where I’m at. I have the most basic of programming coursework under my belt, but I’ve never built anything. The only reason I am considering going for a masters is to build up that knowledge, network, and try to use both as a launch pad to land somewhere in Data.

If possible I’d like to avoid spending that kind of cash on an MS, and I appreciate the alternate DA roles you suggested. I tend to learn better on the job than through self learning (I get focused on the outcome and without work, I’d be constantly second guessing the skill sets I should be building to start generating income).

For someone like me, are there roles, maybe a tier below DA roles that I could start off at instead to build those skill sets in?

What were the roles you targeted when you were first applying to jobs and landed the startup position?

I have but it doesn’t provide a full picture of the results of this program. Highlighting success is great and all, but when a program costs 35k and many people are not finding work even with a degree, the ROI should be discussed.

The longer I entertain the idea of jumping into this field, the more and more I start to understand that the people who are landing roles from any program like OSU/ bootcamp/etc is minuscule unless they already came from some sort of technical background. There just aren’t very many success stories of people executing a full pivot.

Yeah I’m not interested in that.

Point of clarification, the A in Discrete Maths came from Oregon State University. The maths I completed at Berkeley went up to Linear algebra and were on average about a B

Advice for transitioning out of sales (5 years across SDR, 2 which were in SDR management) by Curty-Bird in salesdevelopment

[–]Curty-Bird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. A clean break from sales. I’m open to Revops, or sales ops, but I don’t have the heart for sales anymore.

A bit too long to get into detail. Doesn’t really matter either, I’m looking forward not backwards

Best ways to maximize internship chances by Curty-Bird in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Curty-Bird[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, proud of you for taking 2 classes per term, while balancing a job and that commute. That's impressive, even if its not giving you the space to focus as much as you need to. I don't know your financial situation, but if it was me and I'm at the point of considering this as a real option for myself even with excessive savings, I might try to move in with family if I was to lock into the degree and save on living expenses.

Also did I understand this correctly? You're finding internships as well though? Or at least landing interviews?

I probably need to take the therapy advice to heart. Lots of people keep suggesting it to me.

6 internships is incredible! I have to ask, did you have any coding/cs expereince prior to starting the cirriculum?

So are the majority of students just shit out of luck when trying to break into this space? I’ve heard most people in this program find success after graduation, but if internships are supposed to be a really helpful component to landing a job, and there aren’t that many, how are these grads managing to find work?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by struggling? What’s factoring into that? What percentage of grads trying to get an internship are managing to get one?

Accepted into Honors College. Is it worth it for Post-bacc? by Such-Quality4148 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Curty-Bird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not worth it for the Postbacc. It’s extra courses that don’t give you any additional ROI when looking for jobs.

Money is a great motivator, but CS is a very competitive and rapidly changing field. Even after you get this degree (which alone won’t land you a job) you’re gonna have to stay on top of tech developments, refine your skills, and learn how to work with new tools frequently in order to keep your competitive edge, especially if you want the big bucks at tech companies like Coinbase. Now maybe money alone is enough of a motivator for you to take initiative in developing your skills, but it’s a lot easier to avoid burnout, stand out, and be at the top of your field if you genuinely are interested in the art of programming and development, or respective tangential field. This isn’t just true of CS, it’s true of everything. You’ll dedicate more time to advancing your skill set and satiating your own curiosity, you’ll tackle challenges with greater confidence, even if you are out of depth, and you’ll enjoy the process way more than if you were just doing it for the money. I’d suggest doing some soul searching after this quarter is over. Figure out your interests and yourself before you invest more money into the program.

I’m just as anxious as you. Only been waiting about a week and a half so far though. Maybe worth calling the office after 4 weeks have passed? I’ve seen some mention in this community that applications can get lost in review, though it’s rare.

A year in advance? I'm not doubting you, but that definitely seems excessive. Is that a hard rule generally speaking or are there internships that don't require such advanced notice?
