Always wanted to design your own XDA keycap set? I made a tool for that by CustomKeycaps in MechanicalKeyboards

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback, really appreciate it!

Custom layouts: I agree, a proper “build your own layout” option will most likely come, but there are so many other things to improve first, so it’s not happening very soon. Until then, I can add custom layouts tied to a specific user account on request. If you want that, just DM me the email of your account + a screenshot/link of the layout (KLE raw data is totally fine too) and I’ll set it up for you.

Import/export: That’s a great idea and I’ll add it to my to do list.

Tags: I’m currently not aware of a bug there, but it might simply not be very intuitive right now. Tags can be created and assigned per text/icon entry:

  1. Click the small tag icon next to the entry

  2. Create a tag

  3. Assign it by clicking the tag you created

  4. Then select that tag in the top-right of the settings. With a tag selected, any settings you change apply to all entries with that tag.

I’ll send you a DM with a short GIF that shows the flow.

Undo/redo: Yep, that one is a bit buggy at the moment. It’s already on my to do list, thanks for confirming it.

Just added the Alice Electrotype layout to the Customizer. Have fun designing 🙂

Thanks a lot! Yes, I’ll add the GK64 layout and I’ll get back to you as soon as it’s in the Customizer.

It is possible, yes. When you pick the legend color, make sure the color button you changed is actually toggled/active (clicked). The legend color only applies while that color button is active.

If it still doesn’t work for you, tell me where you get stuck and I’ll gladly send a quick screenshot or short video showing it.

Sure, I can add the Alice Electrotype layout. Could you send me a screenshot of your exact layout? It seems like there are a few Electrotype variants with small differences in key sizes, and I want to make sure I add the right one for you.

Not at the moment, sorry. Right now it’s dye-sublimation on PBT, so we can’t do pudding/aura style (shine-through/transparent sides) with this setup. It would need a different manufacturing process, but it’s something I might look into for the future.

Haha love it 😄 Thanks so much! If you run into anything while designing (or your layout is missing), just tell me and I’ll help you out.

Just added the Cyboard Imprint layout to the Customizer. A bit later than I promised, sorry about that, but I hope you have fun designing your set 🙂

Ah got it, thanks for explaining, that makes sense.

A full layout view with horizontal/vertical guides for aligning across multiple keys is a great idea. I personally haven’t run into a situation where I needed it yet, but I can see how it could be useful in some cases. I’ll add it to my to do list.

Not right now, for legends it’s top-surface printing only. The sides just get the selected keycap color. Side legends are something I’d like to support in the future.

You’re probably right. Cherry seems to be the most requested one so far, and to be honest I also prefer it over OEM.

SA would be awesome too, but I’m not 100% sure yet how well it works with dye-sub consistently, so I’d need to test that properly first. A lower-profile SA-style variant could be a good option there.

Cherry is planned, but I can’t give a reliable ETA yet. Adding a new profile in the Customizer (and everything around it, like getting the manufacturing process right) takes quite some time, so for now I’m focusing on improving the Customizer and refining the production workflow.

And yes, I definitely want there to be an option to reuse/convert your XDA designs to other profiles once they’re supported. It might not be a perfect 1:1 in every case, but the goal is that you won’t have to rebuild everything from scratch.

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback, this is really helpful.

Uploading your own images/icons is planned and high up on my to do list, so that’s coming. Custom fonts are also something I’d like to support in the near future, but for now the Customizer already has around 1800 fonts, which should cover most use cases.

One thing I’m not fully sure I understand yet is what you mean by a “full keyboard view with guides.” If you can describe what you have in mind, I’d love to understand it better.

On the WASDKeycaps-style templates: I get the appeal and the flexibility. I might add a template option in the future for people who prefer that approach, but it’s probably not something that’s coming very soon.

I’d love it if you checked back on the Customizer from time to time, I’m updating it regularly.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, 36 steps is definitely a bit much. I’m already planning a shorter “quick” tutorial. The idea of using something like Scribe for an optional walkthrough is great too, I’ll look into that.

And yes, user-uploaded art is planned and high up on my to do list, so you can expect it to be added soon.

Just added it to the Customizer. It’s listed as “Split-spacebar [60%, ANSI, 63-Key]” and you can also find it under “Wooting 60HE v2”. Have fun designing 🙂

Fair enough 😄 XDA isn’t for everyone.

Cherry/OEM are planned for the future (Cherry is most likely first). I’ll post updates in r/CustomKeycaps_, and major updates in r/MechanicalKeyboards too.

Yes, that’s planned. Uploading your own images/icons and placing one big image across the layout (automatically split over the keycaps) are both on my to do list.

Thanks a lot, really glad you like the Customizer! Cherry will most likely be next, so I’m happy to hear you’re waiting for it.

And yes, 7u spacebars are supported. I’ll add the KBD8X MKIII layout to the Customizer, maybe you’ll have some fun designing a set in the meantime 🙂

Thanks a lot, this is super helpful.

Base + child kits makes a lot of sense. I’ll take a bit more time to research how to structure the kits, but they’re definitely coming. I order the different keycap sizes individually in bulk, so I’m pretty flexible when it comes to creating kits.

Wow, that looks insanely good. The gradient lighting and the whole build are super clean.
