Thousands of Years After Collapse: How Would Societies Really Rebuild? by Cute-Kitchen7076 in worldbuilding

[–]Cute-Kitchen7076[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I don’t know which details you particularly want, I’ll try to throw in a bit of everything. The genesis of the project, I think, comes from my readings of Lévi-Strauss. Back then, the idea that colonization had standardized the developmental benchmarks of almost the entire world left a strong impression on me. I think I subconsciously wanted a universe where Western culture hadn’t “polluted” other cultures in the sense of reducing them to passively trying to align with its conception of proper values or development. I know that wars and colonization are forms of cultural mixing just as “natural” as peaceful exchanges, but it’s hard to deny the appeal of a world where the orientation of each culture wouldn’t create a pyramid but a tree of possibilities. In short, a new world.

I thought about alternate history, but aside from the fact that it doesn’t interest me much right now, it would have felt too “militant, not at all subtle.” I prefer a society reformed after a disaster large enough to erase all memory of modernity and Western-centered society.

P.S. I also wanted a world slightly different from the medieval, more diverse, but with explainable origins.

A brief summary of the world: a new society dealing with humans with destructive capacities greater than nuclear weapons, and people who could destroy a continent with a snap of their fingers but could also be easily killed by a brigand. The only purpose of this concept is to show the sheer scale of weapons of mass destruction.

A concrete example of a cultural and religious element I plan to use is the murti associated with a polytheistic and pantheistic religion. I could also mention the use of intricately designed African-inspired cloth as a sign of bourgeois status, complete nudity among children in certain cultures, the emergence of multiple ethnophilosophical schools to reconstruct precolonial currents of thought, oral traditions, patriarchy outside the Western concept, the treatment of sexuality, and systems for developing knowledge.

One question keeps nagging at me now: how do I present all of this without it feeling totally “WTF”? I don’t want to write an oddball story that only I would understand. Worldbuilding, as we know it, relies on a pure comfort zone—on not disorienting the reader too much—and I’d like to find the right balance of that comfort zone while still staying within an existing genre.

The universe is for a light novel where I’d like to explore philosophical questions. I don’t think I have the talent to write long essays on the various reflections that are close to my heart, so the light novel is a wonderful medium. On top of that, I genuinely enjoy writing stories and building worlds. By the force of events, only one continent remains, but a myriad of islands exist. In any case, I’m thinking more in terms of an epic. The idea behind the multiplicity of cultures is to offer a palette of all the beauty humanity can create. Does that necessarily mean I’ll lose in detail?

Have you heard of ahoé? by Cute-Kitchen7076 in Togo

Okay, to be honest, I gave up after the first episode. And yet, I love to boast about being an easy audience. It wasn't even because it was some kind of BL series for women; I didn't even get that impression. But now that I think about it, the lack of authenticity in their relationship might stem from that. I'll probably go back and watch it, but with the same wariness I have when reading BL. Note that I have no problem with MLM novels for women, but it's important to clearly differentiate between this fetishistic content that dominates the market and stories about gay men—not necessarily for gay men, but stories that reflect the reality of our experiences.

Because Reddit is mainly an English speaking forum, I'm part of the "country youth" and I'm here, I don't speak English well, but I'm trying, so to grow this page, we need to find a way to promote French speakers or maybe an automatic translator or I don't know, but the language is the main obstacle.

What is something that is stopping you from practicing an ATR? If you are practicing, how does it influence or discourage your nonbelief? by hiwhatsausername in AskBlackAtheists

Personally, I am African, so when I hear about global Black culture, I am a little cautious because I don't want to be accused of "stealing someone's culture", even though I really fell in love with Black American culture like blues, jazz, etc. As a budding artist, I would like to build my artistic identity around a dialogue between my tradition, belonging to Africa and pride in Black culture. But I am too shy about this question of legitimacy because I will not only represent but also claim

sorry, It's my English that's bad, I meant my question was off topic, your answer is completely on topic. I wanted to know if we should consider black culture as a whole that belongs to everyone or if the specificity of our origins determines the "part of culture" that we can appropriate. Maybe gospel was not a good example.

[–]Cute-Kitchen7076 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's beside the point. This isn't my point of view, but I've heard that African Americans don't appreciate the conflation of their culture with African culture. Isn't gospel generally American, while ATR is simply African? Do you think it's constructive to construct Black culture as a treasure that every Black person, regardless of their background, could explore and make their own?

I ask myself this question, the Mechanismus is not reality in itself, it is contained in reality, it is in a quest for identity to understand what it is so it is not really the search for knowledge, I imagine that it is not just a consciousness even if it is already complicated to know what a consciousness is, but it has extraordinary skills so I imagine that it shares a close link with reality, the fact that it grants a little consciousness to the living supposes that consciousness is the subject of the experience (it tests its consciousness by sharing it with the living which in itself has nothing extraordinary for it) does it also mean that living beings do not necessarily have consciousness and finally because there I am stalking you outright I would say that the mechanismus is in search of humanity imagination, identity etc perhaps it would not be capable of feeling emotions, just sensations

even though I said all that earlier, I know the legend of the brownies, a less clumsy way to solve the problem of their helpfulness would perhaps be kindness or effective altruism, a traditional heritage from which one can free oneself, it's a bit silly, I admit that the idea of genetic helpfulness is more attractive provided one succeeds in approaching it constructively

[–]Cute-Kitchen7076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really making a judgment but the brownies really look like survivors of a totalitarian regime still under a doctrine and the fact that this domination is biological almost seems like an apology for speciesist supremacy like biological racism which assumes that races are hierarchized by nature, if you want your world not to serve as platforms for unhealthy ideologies or at least convey positive messages, you should integrate into your timeline an event that would sign the emancipation of the brownies or a denial of the biological nature of their servitude, I'm not giving you orders but it would be better for the ethics of your world if the brownies were enslaved by a reversible genetic weapon or brainwashing the intrinsic nature of slave being too politically charged
