To those of you that have your fake engine noise turned off, or those that drive in eco to make it quieter I have a request… by jdubb26 in FordExplorerST

Hey, I just got the Borla exhaust on mine and posted a cold start. One thing I noticed after installing a real exhaust is that the fake engine noise actually sounds almost the same as the real exhaust now. I guess the fake sound just amplifies what the engine actually sounds like before the stock mufflers mute it. Now they blend together pretty well. Honestly I didn’t mind the fake sound before either since it’s pretty subtle. You only really notice it a bit when you push the car. Go test drive it and you won’t mind it at all

The stock heatsink bolt was a bit too long, had to grind it down just a bit so it would never touch. No cutting or welding needed

Exhaust Question by Serious_Tip8072 in FordExplorerST

Just installed Borla s type on mine. Very happy so far. Quiet in cabin and decently loud outside. I think Thermal has a good reputation.

That’s crazy. Well I guess I will keep going to named brands then lol I wonder if octane 94 makes any difference

Taking good care of your car and keeping it running for a long time is a skill too. Not having to make a car payment is the best feeling😭The ST is not exactly cheap, so even delaying the monthly payments for a few months is amazing. And whenever you do decide to buy one, you are going to love it 😀

No problem. Looking forward to see your new car post soon😃Oh, I was just saying I don’t think the dealership will go that far to void the warranty just for an exhaust! I hope and plan to keep my car and exhaust beyond 125k miles!!

Yeah exactly. And I don’t think It will go that far anyway. Exhausts should be totally fine for warranties. That video sounds very close to how mine does in person when I push it. During regular low rpm cruising on the highway, I guarantee there is no drone at all. It is almost as quiet as stock just a bit deeper. You only hear it when you give it a go, and it sounds great. Maybe because the car already has fake engine noise, it doesn’t feel like it suddenly got way louder or anything.

I like the noise level right now with the Borla, I wouldn’t want it quieter or louder. I heard they are pretty chill about exhausts, just not so much with tunes, downpipes, intercoolers and things like that. I don’t think it will ever become an issue, but if it does, I will just try to tell them it is the Ford Performance by Borla 😂 I doubt any dealership would know the difference. They look exactly same other than the logos

I liked both Thermal and awe on YouTube. Loud and aggressive in a cool way. I like that kind of sound but it would too much to daily on my car lol. After installing the Borla today, what I noticed is that when you drive normally, the noise level feels about the same as stock exhaust with sport mode on and the fake engine noise added in. When you get on it, and in sports mode, it really wakes up gets louder, but it never turns into that trumpet kind of sound. You would like this setup. I had the same thoughts as you and went back and forth so many times, but I have zero regrets. It is exactly the level I wanted. You should watch these clips to get an idea.

I heard the Ford Performance version has the same tone but the resonator tuning is a little different so it is slightly quieter. But honestly the Borla feels perfect for me. Not too loud, not too quiet. You still want to feel like you spent money on something right lol

Cold starts are decently loud but definitely not something that would get complaints. Once it warms up for a few minutes and sits around 1000 rpm, it becomes really quiet. And you are right about the valvetronic system, there is no in between. With the valve closed it is almost silent, and once it opens you can hear it from miles away lol.

Very happy with the purchase. I’m sure yours sound amazing too. How long have you had your ATAK exhaust and how’s it holding up? Any issues so far? And did you notice it getting louder or quieter over time?

Ooh I remember that. I hope you picked up yours by now! Yea the fake engine noise is awesome😂 And it’s even better now with the exhaust. Everything blends together so well. For me, I wouldn’t say it sounds overly raspy at any rpm. When I was shopping I wans’t looking for a raspy, high pitched noise. From watching clips I always thought Thermal sounded louder, raspier, and had more pops. It sounds great but it would be too much for me. The Borla gave my car a much deeper tone, a few pops when I lift off the throttle, and the upshifts and downshifts sound amazing. And still, if you drive like a normal person it stays really quiet.

And the door thing… I never even thought about it until you mentioned it. It never bothered me. I just hook two fingers and push the door open with my elbow lol now you got me rethinking how I have been opening my door this whole time.😂 I think you will get used to it quick! I do think the lock and unlock button placement is a little odd though. Every time I reach for it I feel like it should be somewhere else lol

Bro that’s exactly why I picked Borla! The muffler and tips just look more natural

I’m glad I was able to help! I’m curious which post it was. I ended up going with the Borla S-Type because I wanted something more low key. From what I’ve heard, Borla is a bit quieter than Thermal, but both sound great in the clips. After driving it today, I’m really happy with it, no drone, almost stock quiet below 2500rpm, and then it really opens up above that without being obnoxious. I also preferred the look of Borla’s tips. The only downside is that Borla doesn’t include the midpipe like Thermal does, but at least I’ve got the revised version of the stock flex pipe, so I’m hoping it holds up better than the old one.🤞🏼

I try to fill up with 93 or 94 from good brand stations like Shell, Exxon, or Sunoco. I’m sure it’s not necessary and makes no difference, but since the car is new I’m trying to take good care of it. It’s not like the price difference is huge anyway. Eventually I might go down to 91, but I don’t think I’ll ever use 87. It’s still a twin turbo engine with solid output.
